'We used a beachball as an alien!' John Carpenter on his gloriously shonky sci-fi comedy Dark Star

omg did u know that dark star was made on like $20k lol what kind of crazy genius comes up w/ that budget? 🤯 anyway, i think its awesome how carter & obannon took risks w/ the script & added all these wacky elements like the alien prop (lol beach ball) 2 day it still holds up in terms of sci-fi humor. btw, who else remembers seeing this movie as a kid & being confused but also kinda entertained by it? 🤔

Dark Star is literally one of the most underrated films out there 🤯! I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a comedy about a crew of misfits trying to destroy unstable planets in space? The fact that it took 3 years to make and only got released in 45 theaters back in the day just adds to its charm. And can we talk about that beach ball "alien" tho? 😂👽 I think what makes Dark Star so timeless is its ability to poke fun at sci-fi tropes while still being weirdly relatable to modern society. The whole "just find me something to blow up" vibe from Doolittle is honestly really disturbingly relevant right now... it's like Carpenter and O'Bannon tapped into some dark truth or something 😅
