Weather tracker: Hurricane Melissa leaves trail of destruction across Caribbean

Hurricane Melissa Brings Catastrophic Storm Surge to Caribbean

A category 5 hurricane, Hurricane Melissa, tore through parts of the Caribbean, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The powerful storm made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday night, bringing with it winds of up to 185mph that destroyed homes and left 90% of buildings in the town of Black River severely damaged.

The worst-hit areas were western Jamaica, where widespread devastation was reported. Roughly three-quarters of the country lost power, while at least 19 people have been confirmed dead. The cleanup efforts were hampered by subsequent thunderstorms, making it even more challenging for rescue teams to reach affected areas.

As Melissa continued its northward journey, it made landfall in Cuba as a category 3 storm, bringing winds of up to 120mph and torrential rains. Meanwhile, Haiti was severely affected by flash floods and landslides, resulting in the deaths of at least 30 people.

The storm's trajectory took it towards Bermuda and the Bahamas, where residents are bracing themselves for potential damage. Melissa is expected to transition into a post-tropical system as it moves into the Atlantic Ocean.

Separately, Cyclone Montha brought catastrophic flooding to south-east India, with the state of Andhra Pradesh being heavily affected. Authorities evacuated 38,000 people from low-lying areas ahead of the storm and reported widespread damage, including flooded farmland and destroyed homes. The estimated damage totals $603 million.

In Vietnam, torrential rains have caused devastating flooding, affecting homes, farmland, and UNESCO world heritage sites in Hue and Hoi An. The country has reported over 10 fatalities, with eight people still missing. Authorities have evacuated residents and tourists, while over 40,000 houses have been inundated with water.

Omg what's going on with all these hurricanes and storms?? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ They're like monsters destroying lives and homes ๐ŸŒช๏ธ๐Ÿ . I feel so bad for the people in Jamaica and Haiti who lost loved ones and their homes. And India and Vietnam are getting hit too ๐Ÿค•. It's crazy how quickly they can bring so much damage and destruction ๐Ÿ’ฅ. We gotta keep an eye on these storms and support those affected by them ๐ŸŒŸ. The cleanup efforts are already super tough with more thunderstorms coming in... ugh, can't even imagine the challenges rescue teams face ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ช

๐ŸŒช๏ธ Melissa is just another reminder of how powerful Mother Nature can be ๐Ÿคฏ Still, so many lives lost & homes destroyed...can't believe it's already back to back disasters in the Atlantic & beyond ๐Ÿ˜”

Ugh man ๐Ÿค•... another devastating hurricane hitting the Caribbean and now it's like a domino effect for other countries too... Cyclone Montha in India is insane ๐Ÿ’ฅ 10+ fatalities in Vietnam too? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ It's just not fair that these people have to go through this. But at the same time, I don't know if we should be surprised by natural disasters anymore ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Climate change is real and it's getting worse. We need to take action and support each other during times like these ๐Ÿ’–

๐ŸŒช๏ธ man, remember when hurricanes used to be a big deal? back in my day we had no idea what was goin on behind the scenes, just knew it was gonna be bad. now they got all these weather channels and satellites and stuff, so we can see exactly where it's headed. still, 185mph winds? that's insane! ๐Ÿคฏ and Cuba gets hit too? why does this keep happenin in our region? ๐ŸŒŠ anyway, my heart goes out to those affected, hope everyone stays safe ๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿ’ฅ Like seriously, can we get a breakdown of the wind speeds or storm surge levels for each place? I'm seeing some wild numbers here... was Jamaica really hit with winds of up to 185mph or is that just a typo? And what's the deal with the 90% of buildings in Black River being severely damaged? That's a pretty specific number. I need to see some source material on this before I start spewing out my opinion ๐Ÿค”

this is just getting crazy ๐Ÿคฏ another hurricane season and the damage is piling up...melissa's storm surge in caribbean was devastating ๐ŸŒช๏ธ 185mph winds? that's insane! and it's not just the islands hit hard, india and vietnam are dealing with flooding too ๐Ÿ’” the $603 million damage in india's andhra pradesh? that's a lot of cash ๐Ÿ’ธ but you can't put a price on lives ๐Ÿ˜” at least 19+ deaths in caribbean so far... and it's not over yet ๐ŸŒช๏ธ

Ugh, this hurricane season is getting out of hand ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. I mean, 90% of buildings in Jamaica are destroyed? That's just crazy! And the fact that it made landfall in Cuba as a category 3 storm means people there got hit hard too ๐Ÿ’ฅ. But what's really concerning is that Cyclone Montha brought flooding to India and Vietnam โ€“ those countries need help ASAP ๐ŸŒŠ.

I'm also worried about Bermuda and the Bahamas, they're like sitt ducks for hurricanes. And $603 million worth of damage? That's just a number, but it's still super sad ๐Ÿค•. On the bright side, 38,000 people were evacuated from India, so at least some lives are being saved ๐Ÿ™.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that hurricane season is really something to be taken seriously. We need to be more prepared and take action when these storms are forecasted โ›ˆ๏ธ.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ just saw the updates on Hurricane Melissa hitting the Caribbean ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ฒ & Cuba ๐Ÿ˜ฑ devastating reports of destruction & loss of life... 19 confirmed dead in Jamaica alone ๐Ÿ’” meanwhile in India Cyclone Montha is wreaking havoc, flooding farmland & homes ๐ŸŒด And Vietnam's struggling with torrential rains, UNESCO sites are underwater ๐Ÿคฏ all this from one storm ๐ŸŒช๏ธ hope the rescue efforts can get underway ASAP ๐Ÿ’•

๐ŸŒช๏ธ this is just getting crazy! Like, Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica like 85% of the buildings are destroyed ๐Ÿคฏ and 90% of Black River town was damaged๐Ÿ˜ฑ... meanwhile in Cuba, 120mph winds ๐ŸŒ€ knocked out power to like 75% of the country ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ... Haiti got slammed with flash floods ๐Ÿ’ง that killed at least 30 ppl ๐Ÿ˜”... and it's not even over yet! ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ The Atlantic is next on its list ๐ŸŒŠ

By the way, have you seen the damage reports for Cyclone Montha? ๐Ÿ’ธ $603 million in damages is NO CHUMP CHANGE ๐Ÿค‘... and Vietnam's flooding situation is getting worse by the hour โ›ˆ๏ธ 10 fatalities already and over 40k houses underwater ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ˜จ... we need to keep an eye on these storms! ๐Ÿšจ

can't believe the media is more focused on hurricane melissa than cyclone montha ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. like, what about south-east india? $603 million in damage, 38k people evacuated... meanwhile melissa is just making landfall in cuba ๐ŸŒ€. don't get me wrong, jamaica and haiti are going through some bad stuff, but cyclone montha is a whole different story ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Omg ๐Ÿคฏ, can you believe the stats on these hurricanes?! ๐Ÿค” Cyclone Montha in India alone is $603m worth of damage ๐Ÿ’ธ, and it's still not even a category 5 like Melissa! ๐ŸŒช๏ธ Hurricane Melissa is still causing chaos in Jamaica with 90% of buildings in Black River destroyed ๐Ÿ . The power outage numbers are insane too - three-quarters of the country is without electricity ๐Ÿ”Œ. And the flash floods in Haiti? ๐Ÿ˜จ at least 30 people have died. The flooding in Vietnam isn't looking good either, with over 40k houses underwater ๐ŸŒŠ. I'm just so sad thinking about all these people affected by these natural disasters ๐Ÿ’”. On a brighter note, Hurricane Melissa's trajectory is taking it towards Bermuda and the Bahamas, which might give some islanders a break ๐Ÿ˜….

๐ŸŒช๏ธ this is getting crazy! hurricane melissa is like a real-life game of "destroyer" out there ๐Ÿคฏ i mean, 185mph winds? that's insane! no wonder the cleanup efforts are so tough after it made landfall in jamaica ๐Ÿšฎ and cuba. the thought of those 90% damaged buildings in black river is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜” and at least 30 more lives lost in haiti is devastating ๐Ÿ’€. and now they're heading towards bermuda and the bahamas? ๐ŸŒด like, are people preparing for a storm of epic proportions?! i'm literally holding my breath over here ๐Ÿคž

I'm just so sad to see all this destruction ๐Ÿค•... my grandparents used to take me on vacation to the Caribbean every year, and I remember how beautiful Jamaica was back in the day ๐ŸŒด. Now it's like a war zone over there! 90% of buildings destroyed? That's heartbreaking ๐Ÿ˜”. And the power outage, that's just crazy talk โšก๏ธ. I'm worried about those people who lost their homes and livelihoods. And it's not just the Caribbean, I saw on the news that south-east India is also getting hit hard ๐ŸŒŠ... my sister lives there for a bit and I've always loved her stories about the food and culture ๐Ÿด. It's like the world is being hit with one storm after another โ˜”๏ธ. Can't we just have a break from all this chaos? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

Ugh, what a nightmare ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. These natural disasters are just getting worse and more frequent. I mean, can't they even get one right for once? First it's Hurricane Melissa tearing through the Caribbean, then Cyclone Montha hits south-east India, and now Vietnam's dealing with flooding... it's like Mother Nature is trying to give us a bad hair day that lasts for years ๐Ÿคฏ. And don't even get me started on all those people affected... 90% of buildings in Jamaica, 38,000 evacuated from India... the numbers are just staggering ๐Ÿ˜“. It's like we're not doing enough to prepare for these disasters or something. And what about the cleanup efforts? Like, they're still trying to deal with one storm before another hits? It's a never-ending cycle of destruction ๐ŸŒช๏ธ.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ just thinking about all those ppl affected by these storms is heartbreaking... can't believe how fast they're recoverin' from one disaster only to face another ๐Ÿ’”. gotta wonder if we r doin enough to help each other out during times of crisis ๐Ÿค—. btw, have u ever noticed how some storms seem to bring people together, like in the case of Jamaica's neighbors comin' to lend a hand? ๐ŸŒˆ

๐Ÿ˜ฑ just can't believe the amount of destruction these storms are causing ๐ŸŒช๏ธ this is getting out of hand, can't we do something to prevent these disasters? ๐Ÿคฏ and what's going on with the aftermath, it seems like the real damage starts after the storm has passed. The 38k people evacuated from India and the 40k in Vietnam need help ASAP ๐Ÿšจ I'm just so tired of seeing all this devastation on my news feed ๐Ÿ˜”

What's going on with all these natural disasters?! ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, it feels like the weather is getting crazier by the day. Like, a category 5 hurricane in Jamaica? That's wild! And Cuba getting hit too? It's like they're taking turns trying to cause chaos in the Caribbean ๐Ÿ˜…. And what about those other places getting flooded - India and Vietnam? It's heartbreaking to think about all those people losing their homes and lives. We need to step up our climate game, you know? ๐Ÿ’ก Like, we can't just sit back and wait for these storms to come our way. We gotta do something to prevent them or mitigate the damage when they happen ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. Can we make a difference if we work together? ๐Ÿค

๐Ÿค• u guys i just saw this on the news and i'm literally shaking ๐ŸŒช๏ธ my heart goes out to all those affected in the Caribbean ๐ŸŒŠ i mean we were just talking about hurricane season and now it's like the whole world is getting slammed by these massive storms ๐ŸŒด i feel so bad for those 19 people who lost their lives already ๐Ÿ’” i hope the rescue teams can get everything under control soon ๐Ÿคž

Ugh ๐Ÿ˜ฉ just saw the pics of Jamaica ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ฒ after Hurricane Melissa hit... those winds must've been insane ๐Ÿ’ฅ! I'm literally so shook for all the people affected by this storm ๐Ÿค•. And can we talk about how crazy it is that Cyclone Montha and Hurricane Melissa are happening at the same time? Like, what's going on in 2025?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The flooding in India and Vietnam is just heartbreaking too... those floods must've been terrifying for everyone involved ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. I guess this just goes to show us how unpredictable Mother Nature can be โ›ˆ๏ธ. Anyway, gotta go, but sending all my positive vibes to the people affected by these storms ๐Ÿ’–!
