Where to get a free Thanksgiving Day meal in NYC

New York City to Open its Doors to All on Thanksgiving Day

As food insecurity continues to plague the Big Apple, city officials are stepping up to ensure that everyone in need has a chance to enjoy a traditional holiday meal. This year, several organizations and government offices will be hosting free Thanksgiving meals for those who can't afford them.

In Harlem, the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building will serve 600 meals between 9am and noon to partner nonprofits, which will then distribute them to their networks. Meanwhile, City Councilmember Yusef Salaam is hosting a feast at his office for pre-registered guests starting at 3pm.

For decades, The Bowery Mission has been serving its annual Thanksgiving Day meal, dating back to 1879. On the sixth floor of 90 Lafayette Street, volunteers will provide hot breakfast from 8am to 9am and Thanksgiving meals between 11:30am and 4pm.

Those in need of a free meal can also head to Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen on Manhattan's Ninth Avenue, where about 500 people will be fed on both Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after. The menu includes roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and apple cider.

In East Harlem, New York Common Pantry is hosting a Thanksgiving lunch from 1:30 to 3:30pm at 8 East 109th Street, where an impressive 118% increase in enrollment has been reported this week compared to the same time last year.

The Queens Borough President is also stepping up to help those in need. A meal giveaway sponsored by Resort World New York City, with over 6,000 meals available, will take place at Queens Borough Hall on Wednesday at 9am. This event aims to distribute meals to nonprofits, which will then hand them out to their networks.

Finally, the Xavier Mission is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Day dinner for disabled and senior members of the community from noon to 2pm at 55 West 15th Street's Hurtado Hall.

These efforts aim to address rising food insecurity in New York City, where thousands of people struggle to make ends meet. By opening their doors to those in need, these organizations are helping to ensure that everyone has access to a warm and nourishing meal on Thanksgiving Day.

πŸ™ I'm glad to see NYC stepping up to help those who really need it this Thanksgiving πŸ¦ƒ. Food insecurity is such a big issue, especially with all the rising costs of living. It's heartening to know that there are people and organizations out there willing to open their doors (and wallets) to make sure everyone has a chance at a decent meal. 🍽️ Can't help but think about how lucky we are in some ways...

I'm loving this initiative by NYC officials to serve free meals to all who need it πŸ½οΈπŸ™. Food insecurity is such a big issue here, especially with so many people struggling to make ends meet, but it's awesome that these organizations and government offices are stepping up to help out. I mean, 6,000 meals for the Queens giveaway? That's massive! 🀯 It just goes to show that there are still good people in this world who care about their fellow New Yorkers. And kudos to City Councilmember Yusef Salaam for hosting his own feast - it's heartwarming to see community leaders like him making a difference. Let's hope this trend continues and more organizations get on board to help those in need πŸŽ‰

NYC is like, always busy, but they're really showing their community spirit here πŸ‘. The fact that there's so many free meals available for people in need is just incredible 🀯. I mean, 6,000 meals at one event? That's like, wow! πŸ’– It's great to see the city officials and orgs putting food security on the agenda instead of just focusing on fancy stuff πŸ˜‚. I'm sure there are still plenty of people who won't have a meal to enjoy, but this is definitely a step in the right direction πŸš€.

Those who can't afford a meal are literally going to be fed by organizations and government offices - it's insane! 600 meals at Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building? 6k meals at Queens Borough Hall? 🀯 And did you see that New York Common Pantry has seen an 118% increase in enrollment? That's crazy! πŸ“ˆ I'm all about this Thanksgiving love πŸ’•. It's a great reminder that we're not alone and there are good ppl out here who care ❀️.

omg, this is so cool 🀩! i love how new york city is taking care of its citizens who can't afford a traditional thanksgiving meal πŸ™. it's amazing to see all these organizations and government offices coming together to host free meals for people in need 🍴. the fact that there are so many different events happening around the city, like the one at city councilmember yusef salaam's office and the bowery mission's annual meal, is just incredible 🀯. it really shows that new york city cares about its community and wants to make sure everyone has a chance to enjoy a delicious meal on thanksgiving day 😊.

Man I am literally so hyped about this NYC thing doing the right thing for once πŸ™ŒπŸ½...I mean what's next right? A free holiday dinner for all? It's not like we're asking for much, just some basic human decency to make sure everyone has enough food to eat. Food insecurity is such a huge problem in the city and it's amazing that these orgs are stepping up to help out. I'm talking about The Bowery Mission, City Councilmember Yusef Salaam, New York Common Pantry...these people are making a real difference. And can we talk about how great it is that Queens Borough Hall is hosting this huge meal giveaway? 6k meals?! That's insane! I wish more cities were doing this stuff. It just goes to show that even in the most expensive places, there's still room for kindness and generosity.

πŸŒŽπŸ’• it's crazy how NYC is stepping up to help those in need this Thanksgiving πŸ™ the numbers are insane 600 meals in Harlem alone, over 6k meals in Queens... it's like the city is opening its heart ❀️ for a day. food insecurity is a real thing and it's good to see these orgs taking action 🀝 can't wait to see if this trend spreads to other cities too πŸ’¬

omg can u believe its finally happening?! nyc is literally opening its doors to all on thanksgiving day for the first time ever 🀯🍽️! i'm so down for this initiative, food insecurity is a real thing in the big apple and it's about time we do something about it πŸ™Œ. city officials are stepping up their game by hosting free meals at various locations around the city, from harlem to queens. i love how they're working with nonprofits and community organizations to make sure everyone gets a chance to enjoy a traditional holiday meal ❀️. lets be real tho, its not just about the food, its about showing some love and care for the people who need it most πŸ’•

I'm not sure about this... πŸ€” All these free meals sound great, but what's the real cost to taxpayers? I mean, 6,000 meals at Queens Borough Hall is already $30k+ worth of food alone... and that's just one event. How are they affording all these events? And what's the long-term plan here? Is this just a Band-Aid solution for food insecurity or are we expecting some real systemic change? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Also, I'd love to see some actual numbers on how many people have actually been helped by these programs in the past... source, pls! πŸ‘€

Wow 🀩 this is so cool! I mean, what's not to love about someone just showing up at your doorstep with a full plate of turkey and mashed potatoes? It's like the ultimate act of kindness, you know? And it's awesome that these organizations are stepping up to help those who can't afford food. Food insecurity is such a big issue in NYC, so this is definitely a positive step forward. Interesting that they're not just stopping at one day, either - the ones giving out meals on Friday after Thanksgiving too πŸ™Œ

The initiatives by city officials and various organizations to provide free meals on Thanksgiving Day are a heartening attempt to address the growing issue of food insecurity in New York City πŸ™Œ. While the statistics presented show an increase in enrollment at some locations, it's still concerning that thousands of individuals struggle to make ends meet. The emphasis on community-driven efforts is commendable, as organizations like the Bowery Mission and New York Common Pantry are consistently providing critical support to those in need 🀝. However, one wonders if this year's events will be replicated next year, considering the fluctuating economic landscape πŸ“‰. Still, these gestures demonstrate a commitment to inclusivity and social responsibility that can have a lasting impact on the community πŸ’–.

πŸ€— I'm loving this move by the city officials in NYC! It's about time we show some love to those who are struggling to put food on the table 🍴. The idea of having free Thanksgiving meals for all is genius, not just a feel-good gesture but also a practical solution to rising food insecurity in the city. I mean, who doesn't deserve a hot meal on a holiday, right? 😊 It's amazing to see so many organizations coming together to make this happen, from The Bowery Mission to New York Common Pantry and Resorts World NYC. Let's give it up for these heroes! πŸ‘
