New York City to Open its Doors to All on Thanksgiving Day
As food insecurity continues to plague the Big Apple, city officials are stepping up to ensure that everyone in need has a chance to enjoy a traditional holiday meal. This year, several organizations and government offices will be hosting free Thanksgiving meals for those who can't afford them.
In Harlem, the Adam Clayton Powell State Office Building will serve 600 meals between 9am and noon to partner nonprofits, which will then distribute them to their networks. Meanwhile, City Councilmember Yusef Salaam is hosting a feast at his office for pre-registered guests starting at 3pm.
For decades, The Bowery Mission has been serving its annual Thanksgiving Day meal, dating back to 1879. On the sixth floor of 90 Lafayette Street, volunteers will provide hot breakfast from 8am to 9am and Thanksgiving meals between 11:30am and 4pm.
Those in need of a free meal can also head to Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen on Manhattan's Ninth Avenue, where about 500 people will be fed on both Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after. The menu includes roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and apple cider.
In East Harlem, New York Common Pantry is hosting a Thanksgiving lunch from 1:30 to 3:30pm at 8 East 109th Street, where an impressive 118% increase in enrollment has been reported this week compared to the same time last year.
The Queens Borough President is also stepping up to help those in need. A meal giveaway sponsored by Resort World New York City, with over 6,000 meals available, will take place at Queens Borough Hall on Wednesday at 9am. This event aims to distribute meals to nonprofits, which will then hand them out to their networks.
Finally, the Xavier Mission is hosting its annual Thanksgiving Day dinner for disabled and senior members of the community from noon to 2pm at 55 West 15th Street's Hurtado Hall.
These efforts aim to address rising food insecurity in New York City, where thousands of people struggle to make ends meet. By opening their doors to those in need, these organizations are helping to ensure that everyone has access to a warm and nourishing meal on Thanksgiving Day.
