Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin has lost the country's parliamentary election, handing the opposition right-wing National Coalition Party a surprise victory. The reason behind her defeat lies in voters' growing dissatisfaction with the government's handling of immigration policy.
According to CNN's Laila Harrak, who spoke with Steven Erlanger, New York Times' Chief Diplomatic Correspondent, Marin's administration had struggled to balance economic growth and social cohesion as thousands of asylum seekers arrived in Finland from Syria. The influx has put pressure on public services, housing, and job markets.
"It seems that many Finns were concerned about the rapid integration of migrants into their society," Erlanger explained. "There was a feeling that the government wasn't doing enough to address these challenges."
In contrast, the opposition National Coalition Party had campaigned on a platform of tightening immigration controls, addressing concerns over refugees' integration into Finnish society.
While the election was a significant blow to Marin's left-wing Progressive Party, the loss also highlights Finland's ability to transition between governments. The new National Coalition Party-led government will now face the challenge of navigating the complex issue of immigration and balancing competing economic and social priorities.
For now, however, voters have expressed their desire for more decisive action on this contentious issue, making it a key factor in Marin's defeat.
