‘Wicked: For Good’ Joins List of Top-Grossing Film Adaptations of Broadway Musicals: Full List

Wicked: For Good Joins List of Top-Grossing Film Adaptations of Broadway Musicals. The latest installment in the Wicked franchise, Wicked: For Good, has shattered box office expectations, joining an elite group of film adaptations based on iconic Broadway musicals. According to Box Office Mojo's top-grossing films list, eight productions from the Great White Way have successfully transitioned to the big screen.

At the forefront of this new generation of movie musicals is Wicked: For Good, which has grossed a staggering $226 million in its opening weekend. This impressive feat solidifies its place alongside other successful film adaptations, including Hairspray ($203.6 million) and Into the Woods ($212.9 million). Both Wicked: for Good and its predecessor, 2024's Wicked, were adapted from the 2003 Broadway musical Wicked.

The list is dominated by musicals that have captivated audiences worldwide, with Chicago ($306.8 million) and Grease ($396.3 million) leading the pack. Les Misérables ($442.8 million) rounds out the top eight, showcasing the enduring power of musical storytelling on screen.

Jon M. Chu's direction has been instrumental in bringing these beloved stories to life for a new audience. The hit-studded résumé of the director includes a previous film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda's breakout hit In the Heights. With Wicked: For Good, Chu continues his success, and it remains to be seen if this trend will continue with future movie musicals.

However, other productions on the list were excluded due to their specific production details. Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again was omitted as it wasn't an original adaptation of a Broadway show but rather a sequel to a hit film.

Idk about these movies they all have 1 thing in common - they're just rehashing old stories for cash lol. I mean, Wicked 2: For Good? Really? Who's gonna go see that? And don't even get me started on the original Wicked movie... it was so overrated 🤦‍♀️. The only one that actually matters is Hamilton (and yes, it's a movie musical too) - that thing is a game-changer. All these other movies are just cash-grabs 😒.

🎥 $226 million is pretty wild for a weekend box office haul, but Wicked: For Good's 8x multiplier for its opening weekend is what really gets my attention 🤑. Guess Jon M. Chu must've done something right with the direction... but wouldn't be surprised if we see more of these movie musicals popping up in the coming years 💸.

🤩 I'm loving this trend of movie musicals! 🎥 They're so visually stunning and the music is always catchy 🎵. Wicked: For Good is a great addition to this list, and I can see why it's doing so well 🤑. Jon M. Chu did an amazing job with In the Heights too 🔥, so I have no doubt he'll keep the magic going with this one 👍.

Here's a rough idea of how Wicked: For Good compares to other big musicals on the list:

* Chicago: $306.8 million ( way more than 2x 🤯)
* Grease: $396.3 million (even more 💸)
* Les Misérables: $442.8 million (and that's a pretty epic story too 📚)

It's also interesting to see how these movies bring new audiences to musicals and share the stories with a wider world 🌎. What do you think about movie musicals? Do you have a fave? 🤔

🤔 I think what's cool about these movie musicals is how they're keeping the magic of live theater alive for a new generation. It's awesome that directors like Jon M. Chu are bringing their expertise in adapting big hits to make them work on screen. The Wicked franchise, in particular, has done an amazing job of expanding its reach and making it feel fresh again. And let's be real, who doesn't love a good musical? 💃🏻🎶 It's interesting that Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again didn't make the list, though - I guess you could say it was more of a nostalgic retread rather than an original adaptation. Still, I'm all for seeing these iconic stories brought to life in new ways! 📚

I'm loving how this new Wicked flick is breaking all the box office records 🤑! It's amazing to see how these movie musicals are bringing in big bucks and making more people fall in love with theatre on screen. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch Lin-Manuel Miranda's In the Heights or a fresh take on Grease? The fact that Jon M. Chu is at the helm for Wicked: For Good is super exciting too - his direction must be magic ✨! And it's awesome that we're seeing more film adaptations of iconic Broadway musicals, introducing new audiences to these amazing stories. The list just keeps getting longer and better 🎥👏

I'm loving how these Wicked movies are killing it at the box office! 🎥💸 I mean, $226 million in one weekend is insane! I think what's great about these movie musicals is that they're making the magic of Broadway accessible to a whole new audience. I've seen both Wicked and Hairspray, and I have to say, the music holds up so well on screen. Can't wait to see what other classics get adapted next 🎶👏

just saw that wicked for good made it into the top-grossing films list 🤩 its crazy how well these musical adaptations do at the box office! i mean, who wouldn't want to see their fave broadway shows come to life on the big screen? 🎥 and lets be real, jon m chu is a total genius when it comes to directing these things 💡 he has this amazing way of bringing out the emotions and energy in each performance. cant wait to see what else he does next 👀

Just watched Wicked: For Good and I'm totally hooked 🤩🎥 I love how the movie brings all those iconic songs to life, its like they're meant for the big screen. The special effects are insane too 😲 Jon M Chu's direction is spot on, he really knows how to balance the story with the music. I was a bit skeptical about another Wicked adaptation but this one definitely holds up 👍

The movie musical thing is taking over Hollywood 🎥👏. I think Wicked: For Good is actually kinda cool, gotta give credit to Jon M. Chu for bringing these stories back to life, it's like the magic of Broadway on screen ✨. But what's wild is how much money some of these movies are making, $442 million for Les Misérables? That's crazy 💸. I'm curious to see if this trend continues with more movie musicals hitting theaters soon 🤔.

🤔 just another way to get rich off those classic musicals... think about it, the ones that were 'made for the stage' now being milked for every penny in the cinema 🍿 meanwhile, Jon M Chu's directing skills are apparently worth a small fortune 💸 guess who gets to reap all the rewards while Lin-Manuel Miranda is still trying to figure out how to make those fancy pants musicals work on screen? 🎭
