Winter Olympics 2026: Ellia Smeding picked for GB speed skating

Ellia Smeding Gets GB Speed Skating Bidding Favour

British speed skater Ellia Smeding has been given the thumbs up to represent Team Great Britain at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina. She will be competing in the 1,000m and 1500m events. Smeding, who is 27 years old, had a great comeback after being hampered by a hip injury which put her rankings back on track.

At last year's Beijing Olympics, Smeding became the first British speed skater to compete for over 40 years since the 1980 Moscow Games when she finished with an impressive result. She now hopes to break a long-standing record of no Winter Olympic medals in speed skating for Team GB.

Smeding is ecstatic about her selection stating that competing at her second Winter Olympics is "a dream come true". After recovering from her injury, Smeding found herself back on top and ranked 10th in the world in the 1,000m. Her training and perseverance have paid off as she looks forward to a second Olympics.

I'm so hyped for Ellia Smeding! 🀩 She's an inspiration to many young speed skaters out there, especially women. Let's get her on that! πŸ…πŸ’¨

It's not just about Smeding though, this shows what can happen when we invest in sports programs and give athletes the chance to compete. We should be supporting more young British speed skaters like Ellia, who are pushing themselves to be the best they can be. And maybe one day we'll see a bunch of GB speed skaters standing on the podium together 🌟

Wow 😊🏎️, can you believe she's going for gold after that comeback?! I mean, 40 years is a looong time since anyone from Team GB has competed in the Winter Olympics 🀯. Good luck to her, I hope she makes Team GB proud 😊

I mean, I guess it's about time GB got some speed skating representation at the Olympics πŸ€”. But let's be real, Ellia Smeding's gonna get creamed by those Dutch skaters πŸŠβ€β™€οΈ. She's had a good comeback and all, but she's still not gonna break that record for no Winter Olympic medals in speed skating for Team GB πŸ˜’. And 27? That's old for a speed skater πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ. I mean, they're usually pretty done by their mid-twenties...

I mean, what's up with this news? πŸ€” So Ellia Smedding gets picked for GB speed skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics... sounds nice, but I've gotta question this: isn't Milano Cortina just gonna be super crowded with all those skaters and fans? It's like, every year it's a different country hosting, so why does Team GB need to have its own squad now? 🏰 Plus, 1,000m and 1500m events seem pretty chill, but what about the pressure on Smedding? I mean, she's been ranked 10th in the world... that's not bad, but can she actually bring home a medal this time? πŸ’ͺ And let's be real, breaking that record of no GB Winter Olympics medals is gonna be tough, especially with the likes of other European teams gunning for gold πŸ…
