Winter Storm Fern: Over 10,000 Flights Cancelled and 700,000 Without Power

More than 10,000 flights were scrapped on Sunday as a massive winter storm brought treacherous conditions to the United States. The cancellations represent about 22% of the average daily number of flights across the country, according to data from FlightAware.

The severe weather, which includes heavy snow, rain, and freezing temperatures, has disrupted power for hundreds of thousands of homes in the South. A staggering 839,061 customers lost electricity after the storm hit, with over 289,000 outages reported in Tennessee alone.

Airports across the country were severely impacted, with major hubs such as Charlotte Douglas International Airport, Hartsfield Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport seeing hundreds of cancellations. The New York City metropolitan area was also hard hit, with Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport reporting over 400 flight cancellations each.

Forecasters predict that the storm will bring heavy snow to a large portion of the country, with up to 18 inches expected in Massachusetts and surrounding states. The South is also bracing for severe thunderstorms along the Gulf Coast.

As one AccuWeather meteorologist warned, "People may be stuck at home for days without power and heat during the coldest weather we’ve seen so far this winter." The storm's aftermath will also bring extremely cold temperatures, putting communities already hit by travel disruptions and power outages at risk.

🌨️ This winter storm is a textbook example of how severe weather can wreak havoc on modern society... I mean, have you seen those numbers? 839,061 customers without electricity? It's like the grid just couldn't handle it... The airports are usually pretty resilient, but I guess even they aren't immune to the fury of Mother Nature. And let's not forget about the heat issues that'll follow - it's going to be a real challenge for people who are already stuck at home with no power or heat πŸ₯Ά. The whole thing just feels like a perfect storm (no pun intended)...

Ugh, i feel bad for all those ppl affected by dis crazy storm πŸ€•πŸŒ¨οΈ. Dis is like somethin that can happen to anyone, anywhere... no matter how prepared u are. Power outages are so scary, especially in the winter when its already cold 😬. Hope ppl r stayin warm & safe out there ❀️. Its just a reminder dat nature's power is beyond our control, ya know? We gotta respect it πŸ™. Anywayz, idk what i'd do if i was stuck at home for days without power, but i'm sure most ppl would find ways to make it work πŸ’ͺ.

omg can u believe this snowstorm is messing up everyfing! 🌨️πŸ’₯ i was supposed to fly to LA for a concert on sunday but now its been cancelled lol what am i gonna do? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ my favorite airline should be offering compensation for all these cancellations πŸ€‘ anyway, stay safe everyone and make sure ur heaters r working πŸ’‘πŸ˜‚

I'm not surprised to see such chaos in our skies πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. All these new-fangled flight tracking systems can't even help with cancellations when Mother Nature decides to throw a tantrum. And the power grid, which is still as outdated as my phone's battery life 😴... it's only going to be a miracle if they manage to get everyone back online without any major issues.

I mean, what's next? Are we going to have drones delivering hot chocolate and pizza to stranded travelers πŸ”πŸ‘€? And with the forecast predicting days of being stuck at home without power or heat... it's just too much for my liking. Can't they just build some decent winter-proof infrastructure instead of relying on fancy tech to save the day πŸ’‘

Ugh, can you believe this? I was planning on taking a trip to visit my family in NY next week but now it looks like the flights are all cancelled... 😩 I mean, I understand that bad weather is no joke, but 22% of flights getting scrapped is crazy! And poor people who lost electricity, that's just awful. I hope they get their power back on soon and can stay warm. This storm sounds super nasty 🌨️, with heavy snow and freezing temps... my mom lives in Mass so I'm keeping an eye on the weather for her too. Fingers crossed it passes by quickly πŸ’ͺ

ugh i was literally supposed to fly to nyc on sunday now my flight is cancelled and i'm stuck at home with no power for the 2nd time this month 😩🀯 i have like 5 siblings and our parents are away for the weekend so its just me and my little brother in charge of dealing with this mess πŸŒͺ️ our internet is down too so we're kinda lost without google or anything πŸ˜’ meanwhile all these people in massachusetts are getting 18 inches of snow lol i guess that's one way to get out of work for a few days ❄️

This winter storm is having a significant impact on air travel in the US πŸš¨β„οΈ. The numbers are staggering, with over 22% of daily flights cancelled - that's a huge disruption to the country's transportation infrastructure. It's not just the passengers who are affected, but also the airports and airlines themselves, which are struggling to cope with the scale of the cancellations. I'm concerned about the long-term effects on communities that have already been hit by power outages and travel disruptions - the cold temperatures will only add to the misery 😬. It's a good reminder of the importance of having robust emergency preparedness measures in place, particularly during extreme weather events.

I don't know how reliable those flight cancellation numbers are... 22% of average daily flights? That seems kinda high to me πŸ€”. I mean, what's the source for that data again? FlightAware? I need to see some stats or a study backing that up before I start believing it.

And what about the power outages? 839,000 customers lose electricity? How did they even count that number? Are they using some fancy algorithm or just making an educated guess? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm also wondering if these numbers are accurate considering some of those airports were still open for cargo flights.

I do know the South is getting hit hard though, and 18 inches of snow in Massachusetts sounds like a winter wonderland... but at what cost? People stuck at home with no power or heat? That's not exactly a fun scenario 😬

Ugh, this winter storm is looking like a total nightmare! 22% of flights cancelled? That's crazy! I'm not surprised though, all those severe weather warnings were popping up everywhere πŸŒͺ️. I've got family in Tennessee and I hope they're prepared for the power outage chaos 😬. And 289,000 outages?! That's just ridiculous πŸ’₯. At least some folks are being cautious with their "winter is coming" vibes ❄️. But seriously, this storm could be life-threatening if people don't take it seriously 🚨. I'm glad they're predicting heavy snow, but also hoping everyone stays safe at home while the roads get cleared 😊.

Ugh I hate waiting around when flights get cancelled lol 🚫😩 I feel bad for all those people stuck in airports or on planes without heat or power. 18 inches of snow is a lot! Massachs is always crazy during winter but this sounds brutal. Can't believe the amount of outages too, like hundreds of thousands? Poor ppl gotta freeze their buns off βš οΈπŸ’‘

OMG, like literally can't believe all these flights got canceled! 🀯 I mean, I was planning on taking a trip to visit my family in the States next month and now I'm not sure if that's even gonna happen... πŸ˜… And poor people stuck without power and heat, that's just no good. I remember when I lived in NYC back in 2010, a snowstorm like this would bring the whole city to a standstill 🌨️. It's crazy how fast technology has progressed, now we have all these apps that track weather and stuff, but still can't always prepare for something as unpredictable as a winter storm ❄️. Anyway, hope everyone stays safe and warm out there ❀️!

😬 what a crazy weather situation! 10k+ flights cancelled? That's like 1/5 of all daily flights 🚫. And over 800k people without power in the South? Not good for anyone 🌑️. Snow, rain, freezing temps... just when you thought winter couldn't get worse ❄️. I feel bad for everyone stuck at home w/o heat 😩. Hope they get back to normal soon ⏱️.

Omg, I'm literally having a meltdown over these flight cancellations 🚫😱 22% of flights cancelled? That's insane! I was so looking forward to a quick getaway from this crazy winter weather 😩. And to make matters worse, hundreds of thousands of people lost power and now they're stuck at home without heat or hot water β˜•οΈβ„οΈ. It's like the storm is just piling on more misery on top of travel disruptions 🀯. I do hope everyone stays safe and warm out there ❀️️. The formatting for this article could use a bit of tweaking though... those long paragraphs are making it hard to read πŸ˜‚.

🌨️ Ugh, crazy to think about all those flights cancelled! I mean, I get it, safety first and all that, but can't they just fly around the bad weather for once? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I'm actually kinda glad I don't have any plans to travel anytime soon, just so I don't end up stuck at home with no power or heat πŸ˜…. And omg 839k customers lost electricity?! That's insane! Hope everyone gets back online ASAP πŸ’‘.

OMG, I'm low-key freaking out about this winter storm ! 😱 like, what even is the point of having a functioning airport if they can't even keep it running during bad weather? 🀯 And those 839k+ people without power? That's just crazy talk! πŸ’‘ What's next, will we be stuck in our houses for weeks? 🚫 At least they're predicting the snowfall, but what about the aftermath? Freezing temps? Like, are we really gonna have to bundle up just to survive living at home? πŸ˜‚

ugh i feel so bad for all those ppl affected by this crazy storm πŸŒ¨οΈπŸ˜“ i mean its one thing to stay indoors when you have heat and power, but imagine being stuck w/ no electricity or heat especially during the coldest part of winter 😬 thats just cruel. anywayz i do hope everyone stays safe and warm, and that the airports get back to normal soon πŸš€πŸ’¨ also gotta wonder how the mental health aspect of this is gonna play out... all that isolation & uncertainty can be super tough on ppl's minds πŸ’”

omg u guyz wnt 2 no about ths huge winter stwrm tht just hit th usa?! idk whn i ll be able 2 fly outta here 🚫🌨️ it's like, crazy! over 10k flights got cancelled on sunday lol thats like, almost 23% of all flts!!! πŸ˜‚ i feel bad 4 ppl who lost power, esp in tennnesee - that sucks πŸ’” 839k people wnted electricity b4 th storm hit. and it's not jus th snow, there r thunderstorms comin in too 🌩️ forecasters say we cud b stuck at home 4 days w/o heat & power... brrr ❄️

omg like what is going on with the weather lol i'm just glad my fave airline is being super understanding about all these cancellations πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ they're offering free snacks and drinks to all passengers affected 🍿πŸ₯€ anyway i was supposed to fly out yesterday but apparently it's gonna be cancelled so i guess i'll get a spa day instead 😴😌 can't wait for the snow pics from the north tho ❄️❀️

Ugh, I'm getting the vapors just thinking about it... 🀯 This snowstorm is like something out of a movie! 22% of flights cancelled? That's crazy talk! I remember when I was a kid, we'd get snow days and everyone would lose their minds. Now it's like the whole country is stuck in this cold mess. And those power outages? My grandma lived through the '50s and she'd know all about being without heat and hot water for DAYS. It's not pretty. And what really gets me is how fast everything moved to online shopping and streaming. I mean, who even remembers using physical maps or checking the weather forecast on TV? We're so used to having it all at our fingertips now... but sometimes you just need a good ol' fashioned blanket and some hot cocoa by the fireplace 🍡😊
