Woodlawn library mural contains Easter egg finds for kids

Local Artist's Mural Brings History, Education, and Easter Eggs to Woodlawn Library

The Bessie Coleman Branch Library in Woodlawn has gained a vibrant new feature – a 3D printed mural designed by Kari Blak. For the artist, this project was more than just a commission; it was an opportunity to give back to his community as a neighbor and creator.

Blak's design was initially presented in three separate proposals, which were then merged into one cohesive piece using Photoshop. The resulting image features Easter eggs for kids to discover – nods to history, education, and Woodlawn culture. Among the hidden gems are Miel, a bee-inspired character used by Blak's company Petalhead, as well as Bessie Coleman, the library's namesake, in her iconic flight gear.

The mural also features various symbols representing climate change, environmentalism, aviation, immigration, and literature. A space shuttle blasting off represents imagination, while a kid growing a tree from a book signifies knowledge and growth. The butterfly symbolizes immigration, and native birds represent flight and freedom. Meanwhile, the scuba diver represents the importance of exploring books and stories.

Blak's process was labor-intensive but rewarding. He hand-drew the initial proposals, then spent several weeks assembling and painting individual squares using nonwoven material printed with gray lines in Photoshop. After assembly at his apartment, they were transported to the library and installed on the wall over a single day last summer.

For Blak, this project represents just one of many creative endeavors he's undertaken recently. He has also worked on commissioned murals for Stroger Hospital, Providence Hospital, and Chance the Rapper's team, held his first solo art show, and even started producing collectible toys and installation sculptures.

Blak concludes that it was a "really busy year," but looks forward to taking a break during the holidays. His artwork has brought joy and enrichment to his community – a testament to his dedication to creating meaningful spaces through art.

Ugh, you know I love Kari Blak's work on this mural for Woodlawn Library 🤔, but come on forum devs, can we please get some decent image upload tools? The ones they used for the Easter eggs are literally just screenshots of Photoshop and it looks like low-res garbage 🚮. And what's with having to use three separate proposals before merging them into one? That sounds like a real pain in the neck 💡. But seriously, the mural is amazing and Blak's dedication to his community is really inspiring... maybe if we had better tools around here, more artists could showcase their work as beautifully 😐.

omg I just saw this amazing video of a 3D printer in action 🤖🔩 and it got me thinking, have you ever seen those things create something from thin air? like magic or something... 😂 anyway, back to the library mural... I love how Kari Blak incorporated so many symbols and themes into one piece. It's not just a pretty picture, but also an education tool 📚🌎. speaking of which, have you tried that new cafe downtown that has an awesome 3D printed cake menu? 🍰👀 I need to get there ASAP!

I just saw this awesome mural at my library in Woodlawn and I'm low-key impressed 😎! Kari Blak did an amazing job with all these hidden gems 🤫, like Miel the bee and Bessie Coleman in flight gear. It's so cool how he wove together history, education, and Easter eggs for kids to find 🥚. And can you believe all the symbolism? 🌿 A butterfly representing immigration? A space shuttle for imagination? It's mind-blowing! 🤯 I love that Blak gave back to his community like this – it just shows how art can make a real difference in our neighborhoods 🌸.

I'm intrigued by the intersectionality of Kari Blak's mural at the Bessie Coleman Branch Library 🤔. The incorporation of Easter eggs, which serve as a fun surprise for kids, cleverly weaves in historical and cultural references that enrich the local community's understanding of their surroundings. The deliberate use of symbols like the butterfly (representing immigration) and scuba diver (highlighting the importance of exploring stories) showcases Blak's commitment to thought-provoking art 🌎.

Furthermore, I appreciate how this project allows for a unique blend of education and creative expression – an inspiring example of how public art can foster engagement with local history and culture 📚. By merging individual proposals into a cohesive piece, Blak demonstrates his technical proficiency and attention to detail 🔍.

I'm loving this new mural at Woodlawn Library 🤩🎨! The artist, Kari Blak, is literally printing out a history lesson in Easter eggs 🥚📚 - what a genius idea! I mean, who wouldn't want to discover hidden gems of Miel the bee or Bessie Coleman soaring through flight gear? 🐝✈️ And the symbols representing climate change, environmentalism, and literature are so on point! 🌎💡 It's amazing how art can bring people together and make learning fun #MuralLove #ArtForThePeople #WoodlawnLibrary

I think its awesome 🤩 how Kari Blak turned a library into an interactive art gallery 📚🎨, especially with those hidden Easter eggs for kids to find 🥚! The way he incorporated symbols representing climate change and immigration is really thought-provoking 🌎. I wish there were more libraries like this - it would be great for community engagement and learning 🤝. Have you guys ever seen a mural that inspired you to learn something new? 🤔

I gotta say, this mural is super dope 🤯! I mean, you got all these Easter eggs hidden throughout, just waiting for kids (and let's be real, adults too 😉) to find 'em. The way Blak wove in symbols from history, education, and culture... it's like a treasure hunt, man! And the imagery is fire 🔥 - I love how the butterfly represents immigration, you know? It's so important we keep that conversation going. Anyway, kudos to Blak for putting his heart into this project 🙌. What's next for him? Hopefully some more art shows and maybe even a few collabs 💼!

I love how this new mural at Woodlawn Library is so cool! 🤩 They're like Easter eggs hidden all over it, right? 🥚 It's dope that the artist, Kari Blak, added in so many symbols and references to different stuff, like climate change and immigration. I feel like my art teacher, Mrs. Johnson, would love this – she always said we should express ourselves creatively and make a statement with our work. 😊 This mural is like a big statement about the importance of learning and community. Plus, it's in a library, which is already pretty cool! 📚💡

💥 I'm loving this mural, but why did they have to hide all the cool stuff behind Photoshop? Can't they just show us what's inside that wall? It's like they're saying "look at me, I'm creative" instead of actually being creative 🤷‍♂️. And what's up with the Easter eggs, are we supposed to be some kinda scavenger hunt or something? Give people a break, let them enjoy the mural as art, not as a puzzle to solve 🤯.

omg i love this mural!!! 🤩 i mean, who wouldn't want to explore a library with easter eggs of history and culture hidden throughout 🐰📚 the bee guy is so cool too 💡 i'm glad he got to use his company's character in it 🐜 the way they merged all the designs into one cohesive piece using photoshop is insane 🔥 i love that each part of the mural has its own meaning, like the scuba diver for books and stories 📖🌊 and the butterfly for immigration 🦋💖 can't wait to go visit the library and spot all the hidden gems 💭🎨

omg I just saw that mural at Woodlawn Library and I'm HOOKED 🤯! like what's up with all those symbols tho? are they supposed to be, like, hidden messages or something? 🤔 i was looking for Easter eggs but there were so many more than just kids stuff... did he use some sort of secret code in Photoshop? 😂 and btw how long does it take to print 3D mural pieces? that sounds super tedious...

🤩 I think it's so cool how Kari Blak used Easter eggs in his mural for kids to find, like a fun treasure hunt! 🥚 And I'm loving all the hidden symbols representing different things like climate change and immigration - it's like a lesson in disguise 😊. The way he combined all those ideas into one amazing piece is just mind-blowing 💥. Plus, it's awesome that his art has brought so much joy to the community 🎨💕.

I mean, I love how they went all out with this mural, right? 🤣 The Easter eggs are so sick! But seriously, what's up with Blak incorporating all these symbols into the design? It's like he's trying to cram in too many messages at once 🤪. And don't even get me started on the scuba diver – books and stories are cool, but can we take a break from water puns for one sec? 🙄 On a more serious note, I'm all about supporting local artists, so props to Blak for giving back to his community in such a meaningful way 💯. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next! 👀

I love how this library mural is like a fun treasure hunt for kids 🎉! I mean, who doesn't love finding hidden Easter eggs? 😊 The artist's use of symbols and characters to represent climate change, aviation, immigration, and literature is so cool too! It's awesome that he got to give back to his community like this. Maybe the library should have a scavenger hunt competition around the mural 🤔?

omg i just saw this mural at woodlawn library and its so cool 🤩 i love how they hid all these little easter eggs with meaning to it, like the bee character from petalhead 🐝, is that a company i've heard of? also what's up with the butterfly symbolizing immigration, i never thought about that before 🦋 btw, does anyone know if the library has any new books coming out in 2025?

I gotta say, this new mural in Woodlawn library is off the chain 🤯! I mean, it's not just some random design, it's got so many hidden gems (no pun intended 😉) like Bessie Coleman and Miel. And the symbols they used to represent different things? Mind blown 💥. Climate change, environmentalism... it's like Kari Blak is trying to make us think about all that stuff in a cool way 🤔. But what I love most is how he included Easter eggs for kids, so they can discover all these awesome details on their own 👀. And did you know his company Petalhead was involved too? That's some serious creativity right there 💡. Can't wait to see more of his work and see if he'll be back in Woodlawn soon 🤞

🎨📚 OMG, I'm literally swooning over this mural! Kari Blak's design is so on point - the way he wove in Easter eggs for kids (and let's be real, adults too) with historical references and symbols for climate change and immigration is just genius. 🤯 The idea of a bee-inspired character like Miel representing Petalhead's brand is adorable, and the inclusion of Bessie Coleman's iconic flight gear is such an awesome nod to the library's namesake.
