X rolls out 'About this account' feature that displays a profile's country of origin and more

X's New 'About this account' Feature Adds Transparency to User Profiles

A recent rollout by social media platform X has introduced an updated feature called "About this account" which sheds more light on user profiles. This new information includes the country where users are based and how many times they've changed their usernames.

According to Nikita Bier, X's head of product, the primary purpose of this feature is to verify the authenticity of content posted on X by providing a clearer picture of its users. The 'About this account' feature displays more than just the country of origin; it also reveals which app or web platform was used to create and connect with the account.

Currently, users can view their own profile information by clicking the "Joined" button beneath their bio, but due to the rollout being rolled out gradually, others may not be able to see this info yet. When using the new feature, users have the option to select which country or region they wish to display – with the full country available as a default.

There's also a mention of 'privacy toggles' that can be turned on at an individual user level and displayed prominently next to their profile information. Furthermore, users who access X via Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) will see a disclaimer stating that the displayed country or region may not accurately reflect their location, as internet sleuths have pointed out.

X's decision to roll out this feature follows in the footsteps of other social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, which have also introduced similar "About this account" features.

OMG u guys 🀯 i am low-key excited about x's new 'about this account' feature!!! its like they're finally being transparent about who's behind those influencer accounts πŸ€‘ & it's gonna make it way harder for them to create fake profiles 🚫 plus, the fact that u can toggle off ur location info is SO cool πŸ‘ i mean, whats the point of havin a social media platform if u cant trust the info? πŸ’―

idk about x's new feature πŸ€”...like its a good move or whatever. now we can finally see where ppl are from without having to do some digging myself πŸ˜’. i'm not saying it's gonna change everything, but at least its a step in the right direction, right? and btw, why do they have to warn us about vpn users though πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ? like what's the big deal?

I'm not sure if I love or hate this new feature on X πŸ€”. On one hand, being able to see a user's country of origin can be super helpful in identifying fake accounts or bots. But at the same time, it raises some serious privacy concerns πŸ‘€. I mean, what happens when users use VPNs or have their location changed for security reasons? It feels like X is taking away a bit of control from its users πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

I guess what I'm saying is that while this feature might be cool and all, we need to make sure it's implemented in a way that respects user privacy and doesn't unfairly target certain groups 😊. Maybe they could also add some kind of 'explain' button for users who want more info on their profile info πŸ€”? Just something to think about πŸ‘€

This new 'About this account' feature on X seems like a good idea πŸ€”... I mean, who doesn't want to know where their online friends are from? But I'm not sure about the VPN disclaimer πŸ™„. If users can turn off their VPNs, shouldn't they be able to see the country they're really from? It's all about balance between transparency and user control, right? 😊 The fact that users can choose which country or region to display is a good touch too... at least it gives them some flexibility πŸ“ˆ. But overall, I think this feature is just another step in making social media platforms more transparent πŸ“Š.

I think this is a total snooper fest πŸ˜’. I mean, who needs that much info about your online activity? It's like they're trying to build a database on every single user's personal life πŸ€–. And what's with the VPN disclaimer? Just another way for X to be like "Hey, we know you're hiding something" πŸ™„. But at the same time, I get why they'd want to do this - it's all about credibility and trustworthiness online πŸ“Š.

It makes me wonder, though, if this is just a case of too little, too late. Other platforms have been doing this for years, so what's X trying to gain from this? Is it just a PR stunt to make users feel more secure online? πŸ€”

I'm kinda surprised they're doing this now, like years after everyone else started adding that info πŸ€”. I remember when I first joined X, back when it was still a young platform, we didn't really care about all that profile stuff. We just showed up, shared some posts and pics, and went with the flow πŸ˜‚. But I guess times change and so do our online habits.

It's kinda cool that they're giving users more control over what they share, like those 'privacy toggles' πŸ™Œ. I mean, who doesn't want to be able to opt out of sharing their location info or whatever, right? And the VPN disclaimer is a nice touch too – it shows they're thinking about all these potential issues.

For me personally, I'm not sure how much this adds value to my X experience πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, it's like, yeah, good job adding more transparency and whatnot... but is that really gonna make a difference in the grand scheme? Maybe for some users, maybe not so much 😐.

Still, kudos to them for taking the initiative and rolling this out πŸ™. It's always refreshing to see a platform evolve and adapt to user needs πŸ‘.

Ugh dont know about y'all but i just checked my x profile and OMG did they really make it easy for people to see where theres coming from?? its like they want us to know if were posting fake news or somethin! at least now users can choose which country to show but whats the point of even havin that option if VPNs are gonna be a thing anyway? its all good tho i guess, just another step in gettin transparent online πŸ€”

I think it's about time for X to step up its transparency game πŸ™Œ. This new 'About this account' feature is a huge improvement, especially with the added country info and VPN disclaimer 😬. Now users can finally get a better idea of who they're interacting with online, which is super important in today's digital landscape. I mean, it's not like we shouldn't already know where our fave celebs are from, but for the rest of us, it's been kinda hard to figure out πŸ€”. And let's be real, those 'suspicious' accounts that have always had weird usernames? Yeah, now they're gonna stand out like a sore thumb πŸ”.

πŸ€” I mean, what's next? They're gonna start showing our IP addresses too?! 🚫 I'm not sure if I like that X is trying to be all transparent with user profiles... it feels like they're just handing out free ammo for people to troll and harass others. πŸ€– And VPNs? Are they really going to display a disclaimer about that? It's not like we can control our location just by flipping a switch. πŸ’» I guess it's better than nothing, but it still makes me wonder if this is all just a PR stunt... πŸ“Ί

I love how X is getting more serious about authenticity on its platform 😊. I mean, it makes total sense that you'd want to know where someone's coming from, especially when it comes to posting content πŸ€”. And yeah, the VPN thing is a good call too - gotta keep people honest πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. But what really gets me is how this feature could potentially help with misinformation on the platform 🚨. Like, if you see someone posting something and you're like "wait, they're based in China but their profile says they changed it last week... maybe they shouldn't be sharing that info?" πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. It's all about being transparent and trustworthy, right? πŸ‘

omg what a great move by X 🀩 I'm all about transparency on social media so this new 'About this account' feature is like totally needed πŸ‘ it's crazy how some people just create fake profiles and pretend to be from somewhere else, but now users can finally show their true colors (or at least where they're really based πŸ˜‚) plus the VPN disclaimer is a good touch - gotta keep things real online πŸ’―

πŸ€” sounds like x is tryin to build trust with its users by showin them more info about their profiles... πŸ“Š the idea is to prove that the content u see from these users is real... but some ppl r worried bout how accurate the country info is... 🌎 especially if u use a vpn, it's like x cant really know where u r comin from πŸ’»

idk how i feel about this new 'about this account' feature on x... on one hand, it's cool that they're trying to add transparency to user profiles, especially with the country of origin and app/web platform info. it could help reduce misinformation & verify content. but at the same time, some ppl might be like "ugh, now i have to give out my location" or feel pressured to change their profile to match what x's saying πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

and honestly, i'm a bit surprised that they're not doing more to protect user privacy... like, what's the deal with the vpn disclaimer? shouldn't they be doing more to ensure ppl's locations aren't exposed? πŸ€”
