Yankees predicted to trade Cardinals for 33-year-old former star

The New York Yankees are reportedly considering a high-stakes trade to bolster their roster this offseason. According to Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller, the team may be on the verge of acquiring 33-year-old first baseman Willson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Contreras, who has been a key player for the Cardinals in recent years, is now entering the final stages of his contract. With the Yankees already eyeing Paul Goldschmidt to fill their first-base void, adding Contreras would provide a veteran presence and potentially help stabilize the position.

Miller suggests that the Yankees' interest in Contreras stems from their history of targeting seasoned first basemen, often signing them mid-to-late in their careers. This strategy has proven successful in the past, with the team acquiring Anthony Rizzo in 2021, who served as a key contributor before signing Goldschmidt this year.

Contreras, while no longer an All-Star, still showed impressive form last season, slashing .257/.344/.447 and driving in 80 runs. Given his production, he could be a solid addition to the Yankees' lineup, especially if Boston Red Sox are also interested in acquiring him, which would give New York an upper hand in negotiations.

The trade would not only strengthen the Yankees' first base but also provide them with access to Contreras's remaining $41.5 million contract, which they could potentially use to bolster their pitching staff or other areas of need.

Dude I think this trade makes total sense for the Yanks... will be sick to see them land Willson Contreras 🤩, he's been solid for the Cardinals, and now that he's entering his last contract year, they gotta make a move on him. Paul Goldschmidt is def a great signing, but if they can get Contra's contract too, it'll give 'em a huge advantage in negotiations... plus with the Sox also sniffin' around him, the Yanks are in a good spot to make an offer 🤑. I mean, he might not be an All-Star no more, but that .257/.344/.447 line is still respectable, and 80 runs in one season? That's production right there!

I don't usually comment but... I think it's crazy how many teams are targeting big-name free agents this offseason. It feels like every team is trying to make a huge splash and doesn't care about the long-term costs. The Yankees want Contreras, the Cardinals want him, the Red Sox want him... meanwhile, players are getting older and their prices are getting higher.

I mean, I get it, veteran presence is important at first base, but isn't that just delaying the inevitable? Aren't teams always looking for younger, more affordable options in a few years? And what about player development? It feels like teams are too focused on winning now rather than building for the future.

I mean think about it... teams like the Yankees are always chasing that elusive balance between youth and experience 🤔. They want players who can deliver in big moments, but also know how to manage themselves through long seasons. Willson Contreras seems like a no-brainer at this point, right? But what does it say about our society when we prioritize winning over player well-being? I mean, $41.5 million is a lot of money... do the Yankees really need that kind of commitment from one player? 🤑 It's like they're betting on individual greatness rather than team chemistry. What are the real costs of success in sports? 💸

🤦‍♂️ Can you believe it? The Yanks are trying to buy experience at the plate like it's a bottle of fine wine 🍷. They're basically saying "Hey, we don't trust our young guns to deliver, so let's just pay someone 41 million bucks a year to do their job for us 😂". And you know what? If they do end up getting Contreras, I guess it'll be like having a steady (read: expensive) heartbeat in the lineup 💔. But hey, at least they're consistent...in their wallet 💸

I think it's kinda cool how the Yanks are targeting that veteran presence at 1st base 🤔. Like, we all know Goldschmidt is a beast, but sometimes you need someone who knows what's up already, you know?

Imagine having Contreras on board, he still puts up solid numbers and drives in runs ⚾️. It's like adding a seasoned pro to the lineup and having him stabilize that 1st base spot for a bit. Plus, if Boston is also sniffing around, it means NY gets an advantage in negotiations 🤑

Also, think about it, if they get Contreras, that $41.5 million comes in handy 💸. They could use it to bolster the pitching staff or other areas where they need some depth. It's like having a financial safety net for when things go wrong ⚠️.

The only thing I'm worried about is how Rizzo did after signing Goldschmidt this year 🤔. Would Contreras be able to fill that role too? We'll just have to wait and see what happens!

idk why ppl think contreras is the answer 2 yankees problems 🤔 he's only getting older & still hits .257? not bad but definitely not worth $41.5 mil. yanks need more than just a veteran presence @ first base. they need someone who can dominate games & carry the team to playoffs. contreras might be ok in a 5-tool player lineup, but as lone man at 1b, i'm skeptical 🤷‍♂️

I'm loving this potential trade for Willson Contreras! 🤔 The idea that the Yanks are going after a veteran like him to stabilize their first base is genius. I mean, we've seen how well it's worked out in the past with guys like Anthony Rizzo - they get their experienced hands and suddenly their lineup becomes so much more formidable.

And let's be real, $41.5 million is some serious scratch 💸 that they could definitely use to upgrade their pitching staff or make other moves to shore up their weaknesses. Plus, if the Sox are also sniffing around for him, that just means the Yanks will have an even bigger advantage in negotiations. It's like they're playing a smart game of chess here, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

But what do you think about this trade? Would Contreras be enough to take the Yankees all the way this season? 🤞

the yanks think contreras is a good fit lol
imagine him alongside goldschmidt 🤝
they always go for vets in the offseason, it's like they're saying "we got this" 😎
an 80rb season isn't bad either 👍
plus if boston wants him too, that's just more motivation to sign with nyc
can u imagine a yankees lineup with contreras and goldschmidt? 🤯

I'm so stoked that the Yanks are thinking about adding Willson Contreras 🤩! I mean, the guy has been killing it for the Cards and now he's ripe for the picking... kinda like with Anthony Rizzo a few years ago 😊. It's always smart to target those mid-career vets who know what they're doing - they can be game-changers in the right situation. Plus, having him on board would give us an edge if Boston is sniffing around too... fingers crossed it all goes down! 💪
