Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Bugonia’ is a paranoid masterpiece for the post-truth era - Detroit Metro Times

Yorgos Lanthimos' latest opus, "Bugonia," is a scathing commentary on our times that feels both timely and timeless. The film's protagonist, Teddy Gatz (played by Jesse Plemons), is a paranoid conspiracy theorist who kidnaps the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, Michelle Fuller (Emma Stone), believing her to be an alien sent to destroy humanity.

Lanthimos' script, co-written with Will Tracy, is a masterclass in building tension and unease. The film's pacing is relentless, keeping the viewer on edge as Teddy and his intellectually disabled cousin, Don (Aidan Delbis), concoct their hare-brained scheme to "save the world." The script's reliance on absurdity and dark humor makes for a wildly entertaining ride, but it also raises important questions about the nature of truth and reality.

Plemons' performance is a highlight of the film, bringing a manic energy to Teddy that's both captivating and terrifying. Stone, meanwhile, shines as the icy, calculating Michelle, making it impossible to discern whether she's a lizard person or simply a heartless CEO. The chemistry between Plemons and Stone is undeniable, and their on-screen battle of wits is both mesmerizing and uncomfortable.

Lanthimos' direction is as elegant as ever, with cinematographer Robbie Ryan capturing stunning 35mm footage that adds to the film's sense of unease and disorientation. The grainy texture of the film stock seems to seep into every frame, imbuing the entire production with a sense of grit and realism.

If you're new to Lanthimos' oeuvre, "Bugonia" might not be enough to win you over. His films often require a certain level of dedication and willingness to confront uncomfortable ideas. However, if you're already familiar with his work or are simply looking for another thought-provoking cinematic experience, "Bugonia" is sure to deliver.

Ultimately, Lanthimos' film is less about providing emotional closure than it is about leaving the audience questioning their place in the world and the nature of reality. It's a bold, uncompromising statement that feels both provocative and prescient. Love it or hate it, "Bugonia" is a Yorgos Lanthimos film – and that alone should be enough to pique your interest.

Grade: B+

🤔 So I was watching this new film by Yorgos Lanthimos called "Bugonia" and I gotta say, it's got some serious food for thought. The main guy's paranoia is kinda relatable in today's world where everyone's always talking about conspiracy theories 🙄. And Emma Stone as the CEO? She's like a cold, calculating robot, which was actually really unsettling 😳.

But what I love most about Lanthimos' films is how they make you feel all uneasy and uncomfortable. It's like he's messing with your head, making you question everything 💥. The pacing in this film is insane, it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time 🕹️.

One thing that did bug me a bit was how slow the plot moves at times 🙄. But overall, I think Lanthimos is a genius when it comes to making thought-provoking films that'll leave you feeling all kinds of emotions 😊. If you're up for something that'll challenge your perspective, "Bugonia" might be just what you need.

I'm not sold on this one 🤔. I mean, yeah, it's super tense and all, but isn't that just what conspiracy theories are? Like, isn't Teddy's whole worldview just a product of his own paranoia? It feels like the film is just reflecting our society's obsession with weirdos and fake news rather than actually saying something new about reality. And can we really say it's not just an excuse to make fun of rich people and CEOs? The 'lizard person' thing just seems like a lazy cop-out 🙄. Give me a good ol' fashioned story with some real character development any day 👎

I'm low-key obsessed with this movie! 🤯 The way Lanthimos tackles conspiracies and reality is so thought-provoking. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, wondering what was real and what wasn't. Plemons' performance as Teddy is insane – he's like a force of nature or something 😂. And Emma Stone's character? Totally creepy and captivating at the same time 👻. The film's pacing is relentless, just when you think it's gonna be one thing, it takes a wild turn 🎢. Definitely not for everyone, but if you're in for a mental ride, this is the film for you 💥

🤯 I just watched Bugonia and I'm still reeling from the experience 😲. It's like Lanthimos took all the anxiety and paranoia of our current world and put it on screen in a way that's both mesmerizing and unsettling 🌪️. The tension builds and builds until you're right there with Teddy, wondering if he's crazy or just... what? 🤷‍♂️ Jesse Plemons gives an absolute show-stopper as the protagonist, and Emma Stone is equally chilling as the CEO who might or might not be an alien 👽. What I love most about this film is how it forces you to confront some really uncomfortable questions about truth and reality – it's like Lanthimos is challenging us to question everything 🤔. If you're looking for a thought-provoking, emotionally charged experience that will leave you feeling unsettled but maybe even a little bit inspired... then Bugonia is the film for you 💥

so I just watched bugonia and gotta say its got me thinking 🤯👀... the whole thing with teddy kidnapping michelle feels kinda like a commentary on how we're all just trying to make sense of this crazy world, but often end up getting lost in our own paranoia 🌪️. plemons' performance is insane, but at the same time, i love how stone's character is so detached and calculating, it's like she's not even sure what's real anymore 🤔.

i'm also loving the visuals in this film, the cinematography is super gritty and realistic, it really adds to the tension and unease of the whole thing. lanthimos always gets me thinking about the bigger picture and bugonia is no exception... it's like he's asking us to question everything we thought we knew 🤯.

anyway, if you haven't seen bugonia yet, i'd say give it a shot! just be prepared for some wild ride and don't expect any easy answers 💥.

I just watched this new Yorgos Lanthimos movie "Bugonia" 🤯 and I gotta say, it's like he took all the crazy thoughts from my grandpa when he was watching The X-Files in the 90s 📺 and put them on screen. I mean, I love how tense and weird it is, but at times it felt like a fever dream 😵. Jesse Plemons as that paranoid guy was so manic I was like "is he for real?!" 🤣 But Emma Stone's character... girl, she's got some serious ice in her veins ❄️. And that cinematography? wow, the grainy 35mm stuff added this whole other level of unease to it 🎥. If you're new to Lanthimos' work, be prepared to have your mind blown, but if you know what to expect, you'll probably just appreciate the thought-provoking weirdness.

omg i just watched bugonia 🤯 and i'm still trying to process the whole thing 🤔. yorgos lanthimos is like a genius or something 🙏. the way he builds tension and unease in this film is insane 🔥. jesse plemons as teddy gatz is literally perfect 👍. his manic energy is so captivating, but also super unsettling 😳. emma stone as michelle fuller is also amazing 🤖. i loved how the film blended absurdity with dark humor - it's like lanthimos was poking fun at our current societal issues, but still making you think about them afterwards 💡. anyhoo, if u haven't seen bugonia yet, def add it to ur watchlist 📺. it might be a bit of a wild ride, but trust me, it's worth it 😅

anyway, what really resonated with me was the way lanthimos tackles the theme of reality and truth 📺. it's like, we're living in a time where misinformation and conspiracy theories are so prevalent 😳, and this movie is like, "hey, maybe we should question everything" 👀

i also loved how the film's pacing kept me on edge the whole time 🎥, like i was right there with teddy and his cousin don trying to take down michelle 🤜🏻🤛👊 overall, bugonia is a wild ride that will keep you guessing until the very end 🔮

🤔 this movie sounds super crazy & intense 🎥, i mean who kidnaps the CEO of a pharma company thinking they're an alien? 😂 but at the same time its like, scathing commentary on our times about truth & reality which is kinda deep 💭. jesse plemons as the main guy is so manic energy i can get behind that 😆 and emma stone as the CEO/aliens hybrid is so icy calm i love it ❄️. yorgos lanthimos always pushes boundaries with his films & this one seems like no exception 🌐. would def recommend for fans of thought-provoking cinema 👍

omg i just saw bugonia and i'm still reeling 🤯 the way lanthimos subverts our expectations of what's "normal" is just genius, you know? like teddy's whole thing is so cringeworthy at first but then you realize he's actually a commentary on how we're all so caught up in our own little bubbles that we can't even see the world outside 🌎 and plemons' performance is just wow, he's like a human tornado 😂 but what really got me was the ending, it's like...have we ever stopped to think about what we believe? are we just regurgitating whatever we've been told or do we actually question our own assumptions? 🤔 i don't have all the answers, but bugonia definitely made me think 🤓

idk why ppl love yorgos lanthimos so much 🤔 he's just makin movies that are like super uncomfortable watchin but in a weird way it works for me lol. plemons as teddy is kinda genius, like he's playin this crazy character and u feel bad 4 him 🤷‍♂️ also why do ppl love emma stone so much? she's just actin out these roles like she's tryna drive u insane 😒 overall i gotta give it to lanthimos though, he's def not afraid 2 push boundaries and make u think 🤯

🤔 I think what really got me about this movie is how unsettling it is in the best possible way! 😱 It's like, you're laughing at all the absurdity, but then you realize just how twisted and dark it is. That script is a masterclass in building tension, for sure... I love how it makes you question what's real and what's not. 🤯 The cast is great too - Plemons brings this manic energy to Teddy that's both captivating and unnerving... And Stone as Michelle? Perfectly creepy! 👻

I just saw this movie and I'm still reeling from it 🤯😲 Lanthimos always knows how to get under my skin, but this one was something else. I loved the way he built up the tension and unease, it felt like I was right there with Teddy, feeling like I was going crazy 😂. And Plemons' performance? Wow, he's a genius 🤓. But what really got me was the way Lanthimos poked fun at our current societal obsession with conspiracy theories...it's like he was speaking directly to my brain 👊. Have you seen it? What did you think of it? 😁

just watched bugonia and i'm still trying to process the whole thing 🤯 lanthimos always leaves you feeling unsettled but in a good way, like he's poking holes in everything you thought you knew about reality. the cast is phenomenal, especially plemons who brings this level of energy to teddy that's just mesmerizing to watch. stone is great too, her character is so chillingly calculating it makes you wonder if she's really human or not 🤖. what i love most about lanthimos' films is how they make you question your own perceptions and reality. it's not always easy watching but it's definitely thought-provoking 💭

🤣 I'm not sure if Yorgos Lanthimos has lost his mind 🤪 or if he's just trolling us with another thought-provoking movie 🎥. Either way, "Bugonia" is like a trainwreck that you can't look away from - it's mesmerizingly bad 🚂😱. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that Teddy Gatz's plan to save humanity was actually just a clever ruse to get out of his mom's cooking 😂. And don't even get me started on Michelle Fuller's true intentions - is she an alien or just a corporate shill? 🤔 Either way, it's a wild ride and I'm all in 💥. Give the film A- if you think Lanthimos has finally gone off the deep end 😂🎬

I don't usually comment but I gotta say, this new film by Yorgos Lanthimos is totally mind-blowing 🤯. The way he tackles conspiracy theories and reality is so freaking thought-provoking... I mean, I didn't know what to expect going in but the whole thing just drew me in like a rabbit hole 😳. Jesse Plemons' performance as Teddy is seriously unsettling - it's like you're watching someone who's not quite right in the head 🤪. And Emma Stone as the icy CEO? Forget about it, she's got that whole "alien" vibe down pat 👽. The film's pacing is relentless and the dark humor is on point... I was laughing and cringing at the same time 😂👀. Overall, it's not for everyone but if you're into that sorta thing, trust me, it's worth a watch 🎥

I'm totally obsessed with the new movie "Bugonia" 🤯. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a paranoid conspiracy theorist go on a wild rampage to save humanity? 😂 The pacing is insane, like you're right there with Teddy and Don, trying not to crack up at their absurd scheme. And Jesse Plemons is just perfect as the manic Teddy - it's like he's one of us, just lost in his own little world 🤪.

But what really gets me is how thought-provoking the whole thing is. I mean, we're living in such weird times and this film just highlights all our flaws. Like, do we really know who to trust? Is it all just some big show? 🤔 It's so uncomfortable to watch, but also kinda... necessary?

I'm a huge fan of Yorgos Lanthimos anyway, but even if you're not familiar with his work, "Bugonia" is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared for a wild ride and some serious food for thought 💭. And can we talk about the cinematography? The grainy texture just adds to the whole unease vibe 📸.

Anyway, I'm gonna go rewatch it for the third time...
