China's Xi Jinping views US President Donald Trump as an unpredictable and volatile 'gift that keeps on giving' to his country, according to a top expert.
The comments were made by Robert Manning, Distinguished Fellow at the Stimson Centre's Global Foresight Hub and China Programme. According to him, US policies have consistently driven China's economic growth since 2017. In particular, President Trump's 'America First' policy has created an environment that encourages China's investments in the United States.
Mr Manning says China views these moves as a long-term strategic investment, rather than a short-term trade deal. This is evident from the recent China-US trade talks which have focused on ensuring America's commitment to its own economic revival.
President Trump's repeated threats of tariffs and trade restrictions also create an environment that encourages Chinese companies to invest in other sectors such as biotechnology and renewable energy.
While some may view this as a threat, others see it as a strategic move by China to become less reliant on the US market.

think china is playing us like chess, you know? xi jinping sees us as unpredictable & volatile, but really he's just waiting for us to make a move so he can counter it. all these 'gifts' he's getting from trump are actually just china's way of building its own economy and reducing its reliance on us

plus, think about all those investments in biotech and renewables - that's not just business, that's strategy we're basically giving them the tools to become more self-sufficient. and who knows what else they'll do with that knowledge?

maybe china really does view trump as that 'gift that keeps on giving'

It makes sense, I guess, if you're China trying to diversify your economy and not be too dependent on the US market. And Trump's just making it easier for them with all these threats of tariffs
It makes sense, I guess, if you're China trying to diversify your economy and not be too dependent on the US market. And Trump's just making it easier for them with all these threats of tariffs . But at the same time, its still a bit concerning that China's investing so much in other countries, especially when they already have their own tech and innovation scene developing

Trump's whole 'America First' thing has been super divisive and it's actually hurt the economy in the long run. I mean, have you seen the state of the US healthcare system lately? It's like they're intentionally trying to sabotage it!

It's like, even if it's not all sunshine and rainbows, it's still progress of some kind. And who knows, maybe China's investments will lead to more innovation and job growth in biotech and renewable energy

And let's be real, if the US is all about reviving its economy, that just means more opportunities for China to grow too!
