Australian Open 2026 results: Defeats for Britons Alfie Hewett and Andy Lapthorne

British wheelchair tennis players Alfie Hewett and Andy Lapthorne suffered defeats in the Australian Open 2026 men's singles and quad doubles events, respectively.

Alfie Hewett, a 10-time Grand Slam singles champion, was eliminated by Spanish player Martin de la Puente with a score of 6-4, 6-4. The loss came at the semi-finals stage, marking an early end to his title defence.

Hewett's men's doubles partner, Gordon Reid, also fell short in their quest for a seventh consecutive Australian Open title with men's doubles. They lost to Japan's Tokito Oda and Argentina's Gustavo Fernandez in a match tie-break.

Meanwhile, Andy Lapthorne, the second seed in the quad doubles event, suffered an early exit as well, losing to top seeds Guy Sasson and Niels Vink in the final. The 35-year-old Lapthorne had been targeting his third consecutive men's doubles title and ninth overall Melbourne title.

πŸ€” so the aussie open is all about the big names... or so we thought! 🎾 i mean, don't get me wrong, alfie hewett is still a total legend on the court, 10 grand slam singles titles is no joke! but that semi-final loss to martin de la puente was a bit of a shock. and as for gordon reid, well, they're always a force to be reckoned with in men's doubles, but i guess not this year πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. on the other hand, andy lapthorne is still looking sharp in quad doubles, even if he didn't quite make it to the final... can't say ill be surprised though, top seeds are always tough to beat πŸ’ͺ. anyhoo, can't wait for the next aussie open to see who'll be taking home the titles! πŸŽ‰

I feel bad for these talented athletes πŸ€•. A decade of dominance is a tough thing to lose, especially when you're as close to retirement as Andy Lapthorne seems to be. It's like he knows his time in the spotlight is running out... 35 can't come soon enough? 😬 I remember watching my own sports idols struggle with this same issue and it's not easy. The mental game is just as hard to win as the physical one, you know? They'll bounce back, though. That's what they do best.

πŸ˜” just watching these talented players compete is heartbreaking... so much pride on the line for them, their teams, and their countries πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡―πŸ‡΅πŸ‡¦πŸ‡·... you can't help but think about all those hours of practice, dedication, and hard work that didn't quite pay off this time 🏐. I remember when my kids were playing sports back in the day, it was tough to see them lose too - you just want to be there for them, offer some words of encouragement, and remind them that it's not about one match or tournament, but about the journey they're on as athletes... Alfie and Andy are pros, though! They'll bounce back, regroup, and come stronger πŸ’ͺ. 🀞

😐 these Brits are so used to winning at Aus Open they forgot how to lose gracefully πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ think alfie and gordon shoulda given up in 3 set tie break matches πŸ™„. anyways, gotta give credit to Martin de la Puente and Tokito Oda's doubles game was fire πŸ”₯... and poor lappy πŸ˜”. hope he bounces back stronger 🀞

I think its pretty crazy that even with all these wins under their belts, our Brit wheelchair tennis players are still dealing with some tough losses πŸ€”. I mean, Alfie Hewett was basically the favorite to win but he just came up short against this Spanish player Martin de la Puente. That's the thing about sports - anyone can beat you on any given day πŸ’ͺ.

I'm also a bit surprised that Andy Lapthorne didn't have it as easy in the quad doubles event πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I know he's still super competitive and all, but those top seeds Guy Sasson and Niels Vink were pretty strong opponents. Guess you just can't win 'em all πŸ˜”.

Still, these losses don't define our players' talents or dedication to the sport πŸ’•. They'll be back on the court in no time, learning from their mistakes and working towards those next big wins πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ!

I feel bad for Alfie Hewett and Andy Lapthorne πŸ€•, I mean, they've been killing it on the tennis court for so long! It's like, you know when things get too easy? πŸ€” Well, it looks like their opponents in Australia were really ready to shake things up πŸ”₯. Martin de la Puente's win over Hewett was a surprise, but I guess sometimes you just gotta give credit where credit is due πŸŽ‰. Still, it's tough to see two of the world's top wheelchair tennis players go down so early in the tournament πŸ˜”. And Lapthorne, man... he's been on fire lately πŸ”₯! The fact that his team didn't make it to the final is still a bummer πŸ’”. Maybe they'll bounce back stronger at Wimbledon or something 🀞?

I'm shocked at Alfie Hewett's loss 🀯! He's one of my all-time fave players, and I was so sure he'd win that semi-finals match πŸ˜”. Martin de la Puente is a great player too, but I think Hewett was a bit unlucky πŸ’”. On the other hand, Andy Lapthorne's loss in quad doubles isn't surprising, to be honest πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Those top seeds were pretty strong, and Lapthorne has been having some issues with his knee lately πŸ€•. What do you guys think? Should Hewett have handled that match differently? And what's going on with Lapthorne's health? Is he taking care of himself properly?

aww, don't be too sad for Alfie Hewett πŸ€—! he's still an amazing tennis player and has so many awesome titles under his belt 😊! yeah, maybe this year wasn't his best, but that's all part of the game 🎾... gotta keep on pushing & striving for more πŸ’ͺ! also, kudos to Gordon Reid for sticking with Hewett till the end πŸ‘«! and can we talk about Andy Lapthorne? he's still got so much spirit & determination πŸ’₯! third time's the charm, right? 😁

I'm low-key shocked that Alfie Hewett didn't make it to the finals πŸ€”... I mean, he's like a total legend on the court, but Martin de la Puente was on point πŸ’ͺ. And Gordon Reid, man, he's been playing with some top-notch partners lately πŸ”₯. But, you know, those tie-breaks can be brutal 😩.

And what's up with Andy Lapthorne? He's like a warrior out there, always giving it his all πŸ’ͺ... but sometimes just isn't enough πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Nine Aussie Open titles is no joke, though πŸ‘‘. I'm curious to see how he'll bounce back from this one 😊.

Omg I'm so bummed for Alfie Hewett πŸ€•, he was on a roll at the Aussie Open! Got to feel for him, 10 grand slam singles titles and this is how it goes πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. And what about Gordon Reid tho? They're like the ultimate wheelchair tennis power couple πŸ’―. I know they'll bounce back though, they've been in tougher spots before 😊. And sorry Andy Lapthorne too πŸ™, he's still a legend on and off the court πŸ‘‘. Can't wait to see them come back stronger next year 🀞!

πŸ€• I'm kinda disappointed for Alfie Hewett, I mean he's still an amazing player, but it's tough to see him lose like that πŸ˜” especially since he was defending a title. His doubles partner Gordon Reid had a rough day too... 🀯 7th consecutive Australian Open titles are not easy to get you know? πŸ’ͺ Anyways, gotta give props to Martin de la Puente and the Spanish team, they played well! ⚑️

πŸ€” I'm kinda disappointed to see Alfie Hewett lose that early in the tournament. He was supposed to defend his title, but it didn't quite work out. 😐 The Australian Open is always a tough one, but you'd think 10 Grand Slam singles titles would give him an edge. 🏸 Anyway, I guess that's just how tennis goes sometimes. πŸ‘Š At least Gordon Reid and Andy Lapthorne put up a good fight - it's not easy competing at the highest level. πŸ’ͺ

I FEEL BAD FOR ALFIE HEWETT AND ANDY LAPTHORNE, THEY PUT IN SUCH GREAT EFFORTS BUT JUST COULDN'T SEEM TO GET OVER THE LINE THIS TIME AROUND πŸ€•πŸΈ. 10 GRAND SLAM SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS IS NO JOKE, ALFIE HAS SO MUCH TO BE PROUD OF, EVEN IF IT WASN'T THE RESULT HE HOPED FOR. ANDY, ON THE OTHER HAND, WAS LOOKING STRONG IN THE QUAD DOUBLES EVENT BUT JUST CAN'T SEEM TO WIN THAT ONE TITLE πŸ†πŸ˜”

ugh πŸ€• I'm so disappointed for these guys! I mean, they're legends on the court... but it looks like even the pros have an off day sometimes πŸ˜”. I was really rooting for Alfie Hewett to win that semi-finals match, especially after all his big wins in the past. And Andy Lapthorne's a great player too - he's been doing this quad doubles thing for ages, and it's amazing how well he's adapted 🀝.

I think what hurts me is that these guys have been playing at an elite level for so long, and they've won all these championships... but sometimes you just can't catch a break, right? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ Still, I'm sure they'll bounce back from this - they're pros, after all! πŸ’ͺ

πŸ€” I'm just saying, all these new tennis technologies are supposed to make the game more accessible for players with disabilities, but it feels like they're actually making things harder for them. Like, what's up with the chair systems in the quad doubles? They're so expensive and complicated, it's like, how can you even fix them on the fly during a match? And don't even get me started on these fancy wheelchairs that are supposed to be "smart". Newsflash: I just want to see some good ol' fashioned tennis played with a little bit of flair. Not this tech-over-talent nonsense πŸ˜’

I'm so bummed for Alfie Hewett πŸ€•... I mean, what's wrong with this Aussie Open court? Can't even get a decent bounce for our wheelchairs! πŸ˜‚ Back in my day, we had to deal with dodgy surfaces and equipment, but this is just ridiculous. And Andy Lapthorne's loss stings too - he was on fire last year and expected so much more from himself πŸ’”. I remember watching the quad doubles final at Wimbledon, it was like a battle royale... now it seems like they're just trying to keep up with the able-bodied players 🀯.

Man, I'm so bummed for Alfie Hewett πŸ€•... he was on fire last year and I thought for sure he'd win it all again this time around πŸ˜”. And what a bummer for Gordon Reid too πŸ€—, they've been on such a roll with that men's doubles title every year πŸ†. Andy Lapthorne is still an absolute beast though πŸ’ͺ, only 35?! Still bringing home titles like a pro πŸ’₯! Guess you can't stop these two from shining at the Australian Open... they're the real MVPs of wheelchair tennis for sure πŸ‘‘

Wow 🀯, can't believe Alfie Hewett didn't get a better draw in the Aussie Open this year πŸ˜”. He's got so much experience and talent, you'd think he'd be able to make it further πŸ€”. And Andy Lapthorne was supposed to defend his men's doubles title too? That's gotta be tough after coming so close last year πŸ’”. The quad doubles event seems like the most competitive one this time around... Interesting πŸ˜ƒ

πŸ€• come on social media platforms can't even allow for a proper live streaming of wheelchair tennis events πŸ“Ί, i was so hyped to watch alfie hewett's match but the stream kept buffering like every 5 seconds πŸ”„. and now i have to scroll through all these tweets to find out what happened in that last match 😩. and btw why do they always make us click on these annoying 'more' buttons to see more highlights? can't we just have a dedicated section for wheelchair tennis events already?! πŸ‘Ž
