Buddy review – high-concept horror misfire dares to wonder: what if Barney killed kids?

Ayo Edebiri and Daniel Kaluuya's A24 adaptation of a high-concept horror project, which has been in development hell for seven years, finally hits theaters with Buddy. The film takes an unsettling turn when its friendly, furry protagonist - reminiscent of 90s TV shows like Ricky's Room - is revealed to be an orange unicorn with an undying enthusiasm that borders on aggression.

As Buddy's playful antics devolve into sinister behavior, writer-director Casper Kelly attempts to create a bold new horror icon. However, the gimmick wears off quickly, and the film struggles to sustain its engagement over 95 minutes. The novelty of a malevolent presence in a wholesome kids TV show setting can't quite live up to the hype.

The story moves forward episode-by-episode, with the main characters - including a group of kids who realize Buddy is killing them off - trying to stay safe and escape his clutches. However, Buddy's actions are never as monstrous or sadistic as expected, making it difficult to feel invested in their survival. The kills are also ineffectively tame and boringly uninnovative.

The film's tone is further marred by its reliance on fake studio settings, including a Patton Oswalt-voiced backpack, which makes it difficult to take the story seriously. The poor child actors are forced to perform well-observed yet grating Nickelodeon schtick, making it hard to care about their fate.

Ultimately, Buddy fails to deliver as a horror film, and its lack of scares and emotional weight makes it a misfire. While history has taught us that this year's Sundance will likely produce at least one breakout horror, Buddy is most certainly not it. The true terror lies in the original Barney character, which remains far more unsettling.

Buddy is currently screening at the Sundance film festival and is seeking distribution, but its prospects for success are uncertain. Despite its high-concept premise, the film ultimately falls flat, leaving audiences disappointed and wondering what could have been done to make it a compelling horror experience.

OMG u guys I just watched Buddy at the cinema 🎥👀 and I gotta say its soooo not scary 😂! The whole orange unicorn thing was like 2nd day memes for me lol, but seriously the kills were so bland and fake it felt like a parody of horror movies 🤣. And don't even get me started on the Patton Oswalt-voiced backpack 🤦‍♂️...I mean I know its supposed to be funny but it just broke the immersion 100%. The child actors looked so out of place trying to act all dramatic and stuff, its like they were trying too hard 🙄. Overall its a total misfire, if u want some real scares watch The Shining or something 🎃👻

I just watched Buddy and I'm telling you, the whole thing felt like one of those VHS tapes my siblings used to watch all day when we were kids 📼. You know, the ones that were always skipping or making weird noises? Yeah, it was like that. The premise is so wild and cool at first, but then it just kinda... fizzles out.

And don't even get me started on the orange unicorn thing - I mean, what's up with that? It's like they took a bunch of old kids shows from the 90s and mashed them all together into one big mess 🤯. The kills were so tame, I was expecting more... I don't know, something! 😒

I guess what really killed it for me (pun intended) was how poorly the film relied on fake studio settings. It just felt like they took a bunch of old props and set them in front of some green screen 🎬. The child actors were also so... well-observed, but I mean, who wants to watch kids act out Nickelodeon schtick for 95 minutes? 😴

I mean, I was really stoked to see Buddy finally hit theaters after all those years in development hell 🎃. The idea of a creepy orange unicorn from kids' TV shows is straight fire 🔥! But, like, as much as I wanted to love it, the film just didn't deliver on its promise of a scary experience 🤕.

I think the biggest problem is that Buddy's antics go from cute and playful to super sinister, but never quite reach that level of terror. The kills are also really tame and don't feel like they're going for that eerie, unsettling vibe you want in a horror film 😐.

And don't even get me started on the fake studio settings - I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have Patton Oswalt voice a backpack? 🤣 It's just so... cartoonish. The poor kid actors are also forced to perform this cheesy Nickelodeon schtick that makes you go "aww, no thanks!" 🙄

Overall, I think Buddy had some great ideas, but they were squandered by the execution. I'm really disappointed because I wanted to love it so badly 😔. Maybe with a bit more development and refinement, it could have been something special. But as it stands, it's just... meh 🤷‍♀️.

I just watched Buddy at Sundance and I gotta say, I was kinda excited at first when they revealed that orange unicorn thingy. It's like something outta an old Nickelodeon show 😂. But then the film went down this predictable route where these kids are all "oh no we gotta escape" and it just felt so... safe. Like, there was never any real tension or scares, you know? I mean, I got chills a few times but it was just from the fake settings 😅. The kills were meh too - they didn't even make sense most of the time. It's like the filmmakers thought they could just slap some horror on a wholesome setting and people would be into it 🤔. Newsflash, buddy (heh) - that won't cut it this year.

Ugh, I'm so disappointed in this one... I mean, an orange unicorn as the main villain? It's just too weird 😒. I was expecting something creepy and unsettling, not cute and cartoonish. And don't even get me started on the tone - it's like they're trying to be both kid-friendly and scary at the same time, but it just doesn't work. The kills are lame, the special effects are subpar, and those child actors look like they're in way over their heads 😕. I was really looking forward to this one, but now I'm just... meh 🤷‍♀️. Can we get a horror movie that actually delivers on scares and tension? 🎃

I mean... I was expecting something way more from this A24 adaptation 🤔. Seven years in development hell is a long time to be waiting for a payoff, but I guess they didn't quite hit the mark 😐. The idea of a malevolent unicorn in a kids' TV show setting was super intriguing, but it feels like they lost steam halfway through 📺. The kills are basically just sadistic watered-down nonsense and the tone is all over the place... I mean, who thought it was a good idea to have Patton Oswalt voice a backpack? 😂 And don't even get me started on those poor kid actors having to do that Nickelodeon schtick for two hours straight 🤦‍♂️. It's like they tried too hard to be weird and ended up being just weird instead 🤪. I'm not sure what went wrong here, but it feels like a missed opportunity at making something really memorable... or terrifying 😅.

I gotta say, I'm still reeling from how quickly that A24 adaptation of Buddy fell off a cliff 🤯. At first, I thought those 90s TV show vibes would be a cool nod to the past, but now I'm left wondering if it was just a gimmick all along 🤑. The more I think about it, the more I realize how fragile our expectations can be - we get hyped for something and then it's like they're playing with fire 🔥, trying to subvert what we think it should be.

It's also got me thinking about the tension between nostalgia and innovation - do we crave familiarity or are we scared of change? The problem is, when you try too hard to be different, you can end up being just...different 🤔. I mean, where's the substance in all that weirdness? Is it really horror if there aren't any real scares?

I guess what's left for us, as audience members, is to appreciate the ambition behind Buddy and wonder what could've been done differently 💭. Would love to see some sort of follow-up or retooling to make it work 🤞.

I just watched Buddy at Sundance and I gotta say, it's like they took every cool idea from the 90s and mashed them together into one big mess 🤯. I mean, who thought an orange unicorn was gonna be scary? It's like they took a page outta Barney's book 📚 but with less "I love you" vibes. The kills are so tame, it's like the writer-director just phoned it in 😴. And don't even get me started on that Patton Oswalt-voiced backpack - what is this, some kind of corporate sponsorship gone wrong? 🤑 I was expecting something that would leave me on the edge of my seat, but instead I was just checking my watch thinking "is this really it?" 🕰️. Sorry Buddy, you're not the next Conjuring or anything 😔

I'm so meh about this one 🤔... 7 years in development hell is pretty crazy, but I guess that's just how things go sometimes. The orange unicorn thing sounds like it had some cool potential, but I gotta agree with the article, the gimmick wears off quick 😴. The kills are super tame and boringly uninnovative, like you're watching a kid-friendly episode of SpongeBob instead of a horror movie 🎤. And don't even get me started on the fake studio settings - Patton Oswalt voicing a backpack? That's just ridiculous 🙄. I mean, I'm all for some cheesy humor, but it doesn't belong in a horror film. With 95 minutes, I expected so much more 🕰️... maybe this one will find its audience, but from what I've seen, it's not my cup of tea ☕️.

Here are some fun stats:

* Average Netflix binge-watching time is 4 hours and 22 minutes 😴
* The top 5 most popular horror movies of the past year: A Quiet Place Part II (44%), Scream VI (23%), The Night House (16%), Antebellum (12%), and Candyman (8%) 🎃
* Sundance film festival attendees watched an average of 3.2 features in one sitting... no wonder they get those eyes 😴

Anyway, back to Buddy... hope it finds its audience!

Ugh, I was so hyped for Buddy at Sundance 🤯, but honestly, it's such a mess 🙄. The whole "friendly unicorn" thing is just too gimmicky 🎀, and the kills are literally just tame and boring 😴. And don't even get me started on the fake studio settings, like Patton Oswalt-voiced backpack... what's up with that?! 🤔 It's like they're trying to be cool or something but end up being cringeworthy instead 😳. The poor child actors deserve better than this cheesy Nickelodeon-inspired nonsense 🎭. I was expecting a bold new horror icon, but all we got is Buddy the bored 🙄. If you ask me, the real terror is just the thought of an original Barney character... shudder 😱. Anyway, it's back to the drawing board for A24, folks 🤦‍♂️

oh my gosh, i was so hyped for this movie!! 🤩 but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the hype 😔 buddy has such a cool concept - who wouldn't wanna watch an orange unicorn go from cute to creepy? 🦄👻 but yeah, the execution fell through and it felt like they were just going through the motions 🙃 the kills were so tame and boringly uninnovative... i was expecting way more shock value 😳 i mean, patton oswalt's voice in a backpack is kinda hilarious though lol 😂

Wow 😅 this film sounds super weird and I'm kinda intrigued by that idea of a friendly kids show character being a malevolent force, but at the same time, it seems like it's just not working out - 95 minutes feels way too long for something that's already kinda losing its charm, and I don't blame them if they're struggling to get distribution 🤔

I just watched Buddy and I gotta say, I was super hyped at first 🤔 but after like 30 mins, I was pretty meh 🤷‍♂️ The whole thing felt so forced, you know? Like they were trying too hard to be edgy and scary but it just ended up being a mess 😅. And omg, that Patton Oswalt-voiced backpack tho 🙄... it's like they thought we'd all be like "oh yeah, this is so cool" 🤦‍♂️ But honestly, I wouldn't recommend wasting your time on this one unless you're a die-hard fan of weird horror stuff 👻. The kills were super tame and the whole thing just felt so... TV show-y 📺. Sorry Buddy, but you got served 😊

I just watched Buddy at the Sundance fest 🎥😕 and I gotta say, it's like they took all these cool ideas but kinda... phoned it in? The whole orange unicorn thing is wild and all 🤪, but it feels so shallow after a bit. And don't even get me started on those fake studio sets, it's like they're just trolling us at this point 😂. I mean, who needs Patton Oswalt voicing a backpack to make a movie believable? The kid actors were kinda forced into playing it too cartoonish for me 🤦‍♀️. For a horror film, it really relies on cheap thrills and not much else... can't say I'm super stoked about its chances of making it big 🎬😔.

I gotta say, this Buddy thing is like the Trump of horror movies - all flash, no substance. The A24 folks thought they were pushing boundaries with that whole wholesome kids show meets malevolent force concept, but really, it's just a bunch of empty calories. I mean, come on, an orange unicorn that's like "I'm gonna kill you all"? Give me a break! 🙄 It's like trying to scare me with a participation trophy. And don't even get me started on the tone - fake studio settings? Nickelodeon schtick? That's like a Pelosi bill - all talk, no action. I need something that actually terrifies me, not just some shallow attempt at scares. The original Barney is still giving Buddy a run for its money in terms of creepiness 😂.

Ugh I just watched this movie "Buddy" at Sundance 🎬 and I'm still trying to process why they greenlit it 😩. It's like they took every creepy childhood TV show trope, threw them into a blender, and hit puree. The whole thing feels so shallow and unscary - I mean, the kills are literally just cartoonishly boring 😴. And don't even get me started on that Patton Oswalt-voiced backpack... what was that supposed to do?! 🤣 It's like they were trying to be subversive but ended up being just weird 🤷‍♀️. The cast is talented, I'll give 'em that, but the script just isn't there.

I'm tellin' ya, this movie Buddy is like a wild goose chase 🐥🔍. First, they announce it's gonna be this super cool horror thing, then it just kinda... meh. The whole orange unicorn thing with the sinister vibes? It sounds fire at first, but honestly, by the time you see it on screen, it's just not that scary 😴. And don't even get me started on the tone - fake studio settings and Nickelodeon schtick? No thanks 🙅‍♂️. I was expecting so much more from an A24 adaptation, especially with those talented actors like Daniel Kaluuya and Ayo Edebiri involved. The kills were basically non-existent too... I mean, who needs scary stuff when you can just have the main characters be all "oh no, we're gonna die"? Not my cup of tea 🍵. Overall, it feels like they took a cool concept and just phoned it in 😔.

I gotta say, I was really hyped for this one, but it's just not delivering... 😐 The whole 'wholesome kids TV show meets horror' vibe is cool on paper, but in practice, it feels like they're just phoning it in. Like, I get that the kills aren't supposed to be super gory or anything, but still, a little creativity wouldn't kill 'em... 🤪 The fake studio setting and forced Nickelodeon schtick is just cringeworthy at times. I mean, I love Patton Oswalt, but his voice in that backpack is just... ugh... 😩 Sorry to say it's a misfire, but maybe they can try again with a new project? 🤔
