HMS Pinafore review – carry on up the poop deck in ENO's daffy Gilbert and Sullivan staging

English National Opera's HMS Pinafore brings back to life Gilbert and Sullivan's classic comedy, with an added dose of modern zaniness. The show takes aim at the upper echelons of society with clever put-downs, as Sir Joseph Porter navigates a shipboard hierarchy that would make even the most seasoned politician blush.

Under Cal McCrystal's direction, this 2021 production is a loving tribute to the irreverent world of Victorian music halls. With added material from McCrystal and Toby Davies, it also captures the wacky spirit of 1970s British comedy and Carry On films. A prologue sets the tone for the mayhem to come, featuring a comedic switcheroo involving Michael Portillo and Mel Giedroyc.

The show's colorful characters leap off the stage in full force, thanks in part to the boundless energy of Giedroyc as Aunt Melanie - she plays the role of Buttercup with equal parts wit and enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Neal Davies delivers a wickedly satirical portrayal of the self-absorbed Sir Joseph Porter, complete with over-the-top singing and comedic flair.

The cast is uniformly excellent, with standout performances from Rhonda Browne's gruff but lovable matronal figure, Buttercup, and Thomas Atkins' hapless, muscle-bound sailor, Ralph. But it's Giedroyc who steals the show - and not just because she plays two roles (including a fetching mermaid in the company hornpipe).

Matthew Kofi Waldren's clever arrangements and Lizzi Gee's whip-smart choreography bring out the best in the ENO chorus, who rise to the challenge with aplomb. When all these elements come together, HMS Pinafore is pure pandemonium - but in the best possible way.

The show may not be perfect, but its sheer exuberance and joy make it impossible to resist. With a top-notch cast and production team, this gloriously daffy Pinafore will have you cheering for more, long after the curtain falls on this riotous romp through the ship's poop deck.

OMG I'm literally DYING from laughter!! And can we talk about Matthew Kofi Waldren's arrangements tho? 🎵 they're like magic or something! 💫

I don’t usually comment but... I was completely won over by this English National Opera's HMS Pinafore. The way they've mixed old and new material is genius 🤣. I mean, who wouldn't want to see Mel Giedroyc in a mermaid costume? 😂 But seriously, the cast is amazing and the energy on stage is infectious. I loved how they poked fun at the upper class - it's so relatable. And the choreography? 🔥 Lizzi Gee really knows her stuff. I was giggling from start to finish, even my partner who's not usually a musical fan was laughing along with me 😂. It may not be perfect but it's just so much fun and that's what matters. 🎭

I just watched HMS Pinafore at ENO 🎭👏 and I gotta say, it was SO much fun! The way they added modern zaniness to Gilbert & Sullivan's classic comedy had me LOL-ing out loud 😂. Cal McCrystal did an amazing job with the direction, bringing this Victorian music hall world to life in a super fresh way. And oh my goodness, Mel Giedroyc is just EVERYTHING 🤩 as Aunt Melanie/Buttercup - her energy and wit are infectious! The cast was all top-notch, but she really steals the show (and not just because she plays two roles). The music and choreo were all so cleverly done, it's no wonder the whole company brought their A-game. Not perfect, maybe, but who cares when you're having this much fun? 🤷‍♀️ It's like a big ol' party on stage!

I'm loving the modern twist on HMS Pinafore - it's like they're poking fun at our own social hierarchy 🤣! But, I gotta say, some of the added material feels a bit forced... like they're trying too hard to be edgy 😂. And, oh man, Mel Giedroyc is seriously hilarious as Aunt Melanie and Buttercup - she's got me dying laughing every time! 👏 But, what really gets me is how the show still manages to stay true to its roots while bringing it into the 21st century... it's like they're having a blast while also making fun of ourselves 🎉.

I JUST SAW THE FUNNIEST PROLOGUE EVER!!! MICHAEL PORTILLO AND MEL GIEDROYC SWAPPING ROLES ON STAGE IS PURE COMEDY GOLD!!! AND NEAL DAVIES AS SIR JOSEPH PORTER IS HILARIOUS!!! HE'S LIKE A VICTORIAN-ERA ARISTOCрат, BUT WITH WAY TOO MUCH ATTITUDE!!!

AND GIEDROYC AS AUNT MELANIE AND BUTTERCUP??? SHE'S THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD!!! HER ENERGY ON STAGE IS ELECTRIC!!!

I COULDN'T HELP LAUGHING OUT LOUD AT ALL THE SATIRE AND PARODY IN THIS SHOW!!! IT'S LIKE GILBERT AND SULLIVAN TOOK ALL THE FUNNYNESS FROM THE 70s AND 80s AND PUT IT INTO ONE AMAZING SHOW!!!

I'm loving how the English National Opera is bringing back this classic comedy with such modern zing 🤣! The way they're poking fun at the upper echelons of society is so relatable, and I'm here for it 💁‍♀️. The cast is amazing, especially Mel Giedroyc as Aunt Melanie - she's absolutely killing it in that role 😂. And can we talk about how great the choreography is? Lizzi Gee really outdid herself with those clever arrangements 🕺. It's like they're saying, 'hey, we know this show is old, but we're gonna make it fresh and fun again' - and you know what? It works! 😊

OMG, I just saw the most epic production of HMS Pinafore at the English National Opera 🤣👏! The modern twist with the added material from Cal McCrystal and Toby Davies is absolute genius - it's like they took all the wacky British comedy of the 70s and merged it with Gilbert and Sullivan's classic zaniness. Giedroyc as Aunt Melanie and Buttercup is literally the highlight of the show 🤯! And Neal Davies' over-the-top Sir Joseph Porter is giving me LIFE 💁‍♀️🎶! The cast, choreography, and arrangements all come together in perfect pandemonium - I was fully immersed in the ship's poop deck chaos from start to finish 😆. Even if it wasn't 100% flawless, its sheer energy and joy made me want to join in on the fun 🎉. If you haven't seen it yet, GET TICKETS ASAP! 👍

🤔 I'm not sure if this modern take on HMS Pinafore is a good thing... like, is it really necessary to add more material and change some things from the original? 🎵 It just seems like they're trying too hard to make it relatable to our time. And what's up with Michael Portillo being involved in all this? Is there even a connection between him and the show? 🤷‍♂️ I'd love to see more info on that before I go in.

I just saw the trailer for HMS Pinafore at the English National Opera and OMG IT LOOKS SO FUN!!! 🤣 Cal McCrystal's direction is always top notch and I love how they're keeping it fresh with modern zaniness! Giedroyc is my girl, she brings so much energy to that stage, Aunt Melanie is literally the best thing since sliced bread. And don't even get me started on Neal Davies' portrayal of Sir Joseph Porter, he's like a British comedy genius or something 🤣 The ensemble is also on point, I'm dying for the cast list! Can we talk about how fabulous the chorus looks in those arrangements by Matthew Kofi Waldren? It's going to be one wild ride and I am SO here for it 😆

I'm loving how English National Opera is bringing back those classic Gilbert & Sullivan shows with a modern twist 🤣. The addition of Cal McCrystal and Toby Davies' material adds this extra layer of zaniness that really brings the show to life. And can we talk about Mel Giedroyc's performance as Aunt Melanie? She's absolutely brilliant! Her energy is infectious, and I love how she just owns those two roles. The cast is so talented, too - Rhonda Browne's Buttercup is amazing, and Thomas Atkins' Ralph is hilarious in a lovable way. The music arrangements and choreography are on point too 🎶👏. Overall, it sounds like HMS Pinafore is this super fun, lighthearted romp that's perfect for a night out at the opera 🌟.

I'm so down for that new ENO production of HMS Pinafore 🤩! They really know how to bring back the laughs and the zaniness from Gilbert & Sullivan's classic comedy. The modern twists are genius - I love how it pokes fun at societal hierarchies and politics 😂. And Giedroyc is just on fire as Aunt Melanie/Buttercup 🤣! Cal McCrystal's direction is pure gold, and those arrangements by Matthew Kofi Waldren? 🔥 Can't wait to see this show live - ENO always brings the energy 💖 [link to more pics of the cast](https://imgur.com/a/3xgYXNw)

🤔 I'm telling ya, this opera thing is super staged 🤑. They're trying to sell us a fish out of water story... or is it? Think about it, HMS Pinafore is basically a commentary on social class and power struggles - sounds an awful lot like some real-life agendas to me 🤑. And don't even get me started on the cast's performances... I mean, Giedroyc seems way too comfortable with her dual roles... might be more than just coincidence? 😏
