Houston City Council Approves $33M Contract for Winter Storm Relief
In a move aimed at providing relief to homeowners affected by the devastating 2021 winter storm, the Houston City Council has approved an ordinance allocating over $33 million in federal dollars towards repair and reconstruction services. The contract, awarded to six vendors, will offer reimbursement pathways and rehabilitation/reconstruction options to eligible property owners.
The program aims to assist homeowners who suffered damage from the storm, with the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Pathway serving as the default option for single-family homes within city limits that have not yet been repaired. However, reconstruction is only considered if repair costs exceed 50% of the home's pre-storm value or the $100,000 rehabilitation cap.
The vendors selected for this contract include Arkitektura Development, Inc., Brizo Construction, LLC, Ducky Recovery, LLC, James W. Turner Construction, LTD, RM Quality Construction, LLC, and SLSCO, LTD. These companies will provide home repair services to eligible property owners through the reimbursement pathway and rehabilitation/reconstruction pathways.
The city is now encouraging homeowners who may still need assistance to submit an application for the program. With nearly five years having passed since the storm wreaked havoc on the city, this development brings welcome relief to those affected by the disaster.
