‘I Play Rocky’ Lands Thanksgiving Release Date, Timed to ‘Rocky’ 50th Anniversary

Amazon MGM has announced that the new film 'I Play Rocky' will hit theaters nationwide on November 20, coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday. The release date is also just in time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original Oscar-winning boxing drama, 'Rocky', which takes place on November 21.

The movie serves as a retelling of Sylvester Stallone's journey to creating 'Rocky' while doubling as a biopic of the actor himself. Anthony Ippolito stars as young Stallone alongside Stephan James as Carl Weathers and AnnaSophia Robb, among other notable cast members.

Stallone's rise to fame is a familiar story - he was a struggling actor with a partially paralyzed face and speech impediment at 29, before penning the 'Rocky' script that changed his life. The film became an underdog phenomenon upon its release in 1976, grossing over $200 million worldwide and winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

Now, director Peter Farrelly is bringing this inspiring tale to life with 'I Play Rocky'. Produced by Farrelly alongside Toby Emmerich and Christian Baha, the film boasts a talented cast and crew. "When I first read Peter Gamble's energetic and poignant script, I knew it captured something very special," says Christian Baha, praising the story as unique and capturing Stallone's essence.

The full release of 'I Play Rocky' will hit theaters on November 20, just in time for a busy Thanksgiving weekend.

man i'm so down for a rocky biopic, but can they really make it fresh? like we're already getting another rocky film after all these years... what's next? a Creed sequel? 🤔 anyway, gotta respect peter farrelly bringing this story to life - he's shown his range with films like 'There's Something About Mary' and 'Dumb & Dumber'. still not sure about anthony ippolito playing young stallone tho... seems like a bit of an unknown, hoping the film doesn't feel too rushed? 🎥

ugh my kid is gonna be so excited to see this movie i'm planning a whole rocky themed party at home complete with boxing gloves and a "gonna fly now" playlist 🥊🎉 we're gonna make some italian food too because of the connection to rocky's origins and it just feels like the perfect way to celebrate thanksgiving with the fam 🍽️💕

🤔 The fact that they're releasing this biopic right before the original film's anniversary feels like a pretty clever marketing ploy 📈. It's gonna be super convenient for people to watch it after watching Rocky, and I'm curious if that'll make a difference in how well-received 'I Play Rocky' is. 😊 Also, I wonder how much creative liberties they're taking with Sylvester Stallone's story... will it be an entirely accurate retelling? 🎬

ugh i dont know why they gotta make another movie about rocky like its not old enough to be retired already 🤦‍♂️ anyway im kinda curious to see anthony ippolito as young stallone tho 😊 what if hes any good? the 50th anniversary thing is a bit much for me too, feels like just an excuse for another remake.

🎥👏 gotta say, I'm excited to see a biopic about Sylvester Stallone's journey to creating 'Rocky'. it's always inspiring to see how one person can change their life with hard work and determination 🙌. i'm not sure if I'll watch the new film, but I'm definitely down for some good ol' fashioned classic 'Rocky' vibes on november 21 🍁💪.

omg u gotta believe this new movie "I Play Rocky" is gonna be lit!!! it's like they're takin the entire rocky saga and puttin it back together again. anthonny ippolito as young stallone? stephen james as carl weathers? that's some next level casting fam! i'm lowkey hyped for this biopic, cant wait to see how peter farrelly brings it all together. its crazy thinkin about how the orginal rocky came from nothin but stallon's own struggles... anyway, im so down for a rocky movie marathon on thanksgiving 🎬🍁

🎥 think it's cool they're bringing this inspiring story to life, especially with Peter Farrelly at the helm 🙏. Stallone's underdog story is definitely one to be retold & celebrated. Hope the film does justice to his journey 💪

🤔 This new film 'I Play Rocky' is like looking into the mirror, reflecting on our own struggles to make it big. I mean, Sylvester Stallone was literally struggling at 29, with a physical limitation that would have held most people back, but he still found a way to create something iconic. It's inspiring, yet also a bit melancholic, thinking about how much of his life was defined by that script. And now, we're getting this biopic, which is like watching a story within a story... 🎥 But what I'm really curious about is how the film will capture the essence of Stallone's journey, and whether it'll be a triumphant ode to perseverance or a more nuanced exploration of his complexities.

🎥👍 So like, can't wait for this one! Just think about it, we're gonna see the making of Rocky and Sylvester Stallone's journey to stardom... so cool! 🤩 I mean, who doesn't love an underdog story? And now they're bringing it all back on the big screen, with a fresh cast and crew. 🎬 Stephan James as Carl Weathers, AnnaSophia Robb... it sounds like a great team! 💪 Toby Emmerich and Christian Baha are like, totally on board, saying this script is something special. Can't wait to see Rocky's story come to life again... maybe even shed some tears? 😊 November 20 can't come soon enough! 🎉

🎥😊 I'm low-key excited to see this biopic come to life! The idea of exploring Sylvester Stallone's journey to create the iconic Rocky is so fascinating 🤔. And casting Stephan James as Carl Weathers is pure genius 👍. But what really gets me is how 'I Play Rocky' coincides with the original film's 50th anniversary celebration 🎉. It's like a dream come true for fans of the Rocky franchise! 🥊 The Thanksgiving release date also feels perfect, all cozy and nostalgic... can't wait to snuggle up with some popcorn and watch this inspiring tale unfold 😊

OMG I'm so stoked for this film 🎥! I mean who doesn't love Rocky? I've seen the original like, 5 times and it still gives me chills every time. The fact that they're making a biopic of Sly's journey to creating the movie is amazing, I can already imagine how emotional it must be for Anthony Ippolito to play him. And Stephan James as Carl Weathers? Yaaas, can't wait to see that on screen! 🤩

ugh I don't know if I'm ready to relive Sylvester Stallone's struggles again...my kid is always like "can we watch Rocky?" and I'm all about keeping it PG-13 but at the same time I get why this movie is a big deal 🤔...50 years ago was a big deal indeed 💥. The cast looks great, Stephan James is so talented, I love him in that TV show he used to be in 😍. But what's up with the release date? Thanksgiving weekend is chaos for parents anyway, do we really need another reason to stress about getting everyone fed and home on time 🙃👵🤱👦. Still, I suppose it'll be an inspiring film...my kid loves stories about overcoming obstacles 💪. Fingers crossed they make a kid-friendly version too 😅

OMG, can you even believe they're making a new Rocky film?! 🤯 It's like, the OG Rocky is celebrating its 50th anniversary and now we get to see a whole new story about Sly Stallone's journey? 🎥 I'm low-key excited, but also kinda worried that it'll be too similar to the original... like, how much of his life can they really fit into one movie? 😬 I mean, I'm all for celebrating underdog stories, but does this have to come out around Thanksgiving?! 🦃 Are we gonna be stuck watching Rocky and football on Turkey Day or what?! 🏈🍽️ Still, if it's got the Stallone stamp of approval (and a talented cast), I'll def give it a shot! 👍
