Iran's state TV airs several ‘forced confessions’ after protest crackdown, activists say

Iranian authorities are using a tactic that's as old as it is despicable: forced confessions. In recent weeks, at least 240 of these coerced confessions have been aired on state TV after thousands were arrested following widespread protests against the clerical leadership.

These "confessions" are extracted through psychological and physical torture, making them suspect, to say the least. Detainees are shown admitting to a range of alleged crimes, from violence against security forces to sharing images with banned groups or media outlets. In some cases, people are even accused of merely following accounts of opponents on social media.

Activists claim these so-called confessions are nothing more than propaganda videos designed to manufacture legitimacy and create a false narrative that protesters are dangerous criminals. The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran has warned that such "false confessions" aim to reinforce the state's narrative, deterring dissent.

The use of coerced confessions is an "unprecedented scale" according to Iranian authorities. They're being used as a tool to humiliate and destroy dissidents' credibility while reminding the public of the high cost of challenging the state.

Iran's judiciary chief has taken the lead in interrogating detainees, with some sessions broadcast on state TV. These sessions aim to create a false narrative framing peaceful protesters as violent agents of foreign influence, deterring dissent.

The protests began over economic grievances but grew into a mass movement against the Islamic republic. Thousands were killed in an ensuing crackdown, which has for now abated. The authorities blame the unrest on Iran's enemies, including Israel and the United States.

More than 41,000 people have been arrested in the crackdown, with over 240 instances of "forced confessions" recorded. One widely shared case involves a teen being questioned over killing a security force member and then told he would face charges that could see him executed.

These broadcasts have been used before to pave the way for executions. In one notorious case, the formerly Paris-based dissident Ruhollah Zam was subjected to an interrogation on Iranian TV before his execution in December 2020. Foreigners, including French citizens Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, have also faced this treatment.

The Center for Human Rights in Iran has condemned these broadcasts, stating that they're "routinely used as the sole evidence to convict" and that by forcing dissidents to publicly 'confess', the state legitimises its repression and uses the televised confessions as proof of guilt.

🤕 I mean, can you believe what's happening in Iran? The way they're using torture and coercion to get people to admit to stuff they didn't even do... it's just horrific 😩. These "confessions" are basically propaganda at this point, but the authorities just keep on playing them out like they're real. It's so despicable 💔.

And what really gets me is that these "false confessions" are being used to create a false narrative about the protesters... like they're not peaceful people who have the right to free speech 🤬. The fact that thousands of people were arrested, and some even killed, just to bring attention to economic issues, only for the authorities to turn it into a story about "foreign influence" and "violence"... it's just not right 😡.

The UN special rapporteur on human rights is warning about this, but what can be done? It feels like Iran is going full-on dictator mode here 🚨. The thought of these 41,000 people being detained, and the hundreds of them getting forced to "confess"... it's just heartbreaking ❤️. We need to stand with the protesters and call out this blatant disregard for human rights! 💪

🤕 This is so sad... the way Iran's authorities are treating their citizens is just shocking! They're using psychological & physical torture to get people to confess, which is basically a form of brainwashing 😩. It's like they want to create a false narrative that peaceful protesters are violent & terrorist-like 📺. The fact that they're using this tactic on thousands of people, with over 240 "confessions" aired on state TV, is just despicable 😷.

I think it's really sad that the Iranian judiciary chief is taking the lead in interrogating detainees and broadcasting these sessions on TV 🎤. It's like they want to humiliate & destroy the credibility of dissidents while also reminding the public of the cost of speaking out against the state 💔.

And what's even more alarming is that the authorities are using this tactic as a way to deter dissent & create fear among the population 😱. They're blaming the unrest on Iran's enemies, like Israel & the US, which just sounds like they're trying to deflect responsibility 🙅‍♂️.

🚫 just watched a video of someone being forced to confess to things they didn't do... it's like something out of a horror movie. these so-called "confessions" are basically scripted propaganda, and it's disgusting. anyone who dares to challenge the system is now being framed as a threat to national security 🚫👮‍♂️. i don't get why people still support this kind of thing... isn't human life worth more than that? 😔

Man, this is so messed up 🤯! These forced confessions are basically a form of psychological warfare, using fear and torture to get people to confess to crimes they didn't even commit. It's like something out of a bad movie 🍿, where the authorities are trying to break their detainees' spirits and make them seem like the enemy 👊.

I'm not surprised that the Iranian authorities are using this tactic, though - it's been around for ages, and it's a classic way to silence dissent and crush opposition. But come on, 41,000 people arrested? That's crazy! 🤯 Over 240 instances of forced confessions? It's like they're trying to make an example out of everyone who dared to speak out against the government.

The UN special rapporteur on human rights is spot on - these false confessions are just propaganda videos designed to manipulate public opinion. And let's not forget that some people are even accused of sharing images with banned groups or media outlets... like, what's the criteria for that? 🤔

It's disgusting that Ruhollah Zam and Cécile Kohler had to go through this treatment before their executions. It's a harsh reminder that in Iran, you're not safe just because you're speaking out against the government. 💔

I'm livid about this 🤯. These coerced confessions are a clear abuse of human rights and can't be taken seriously. The fact that they're being aired on state TV just to manufacture legitimacy is disgusting. It's not surprising the authorities think they can get away with this, but international pressure will eventually catch up with them.

🌎 This is just so messed up... Coerced confessions are a classic move, but using them on a massive scale like this? It's insane. The way they're trying to frame peaceful protesters as violent agents of foreign influence is just propaganda at its finest. And let's not forget the psychological and physical torture that goes into these "confessions" - it's despicable.

The UN special rapporteur has been warning about this for ages, but still, no one seems to be doing anything about it. The judiciary chief taking center stage on state TV is a whole new level of manipulation. These forced confessions are being used to humiliate and destroy the credibility of dissidents, which is just sick.

And have you seen those numbers? Over 41,000 people arrested, and over 240 "confessions" recorded. It's like they're trying to break some kind of record for most ridiculous human rights abuses in history. The Center for Human Rights in Iran has been saying it all along - these confessions are just used as proof of guilt, and the state is using them to legitimize its repression.

It's not even about Iran's enemies anymore; it's about the people being treated like animals. 😡

🤯 I'm literally blown away by how despicable these forced confessions are! Like, what kind of government would do this? They're basically using human torture as a tool to control people's minds. 🚫 And they're broadcasting it on state TV like it's some kind of entertainment show. It's so messed up.

I mean, think about it - these "confessions" are literally being fabricated through psychological and physical torture. The UN is warning that these false confessions are just a way for the government to create a narrative and silence dissenters. 🚨 And they're using this tactic on thousands of people, detaining over 41k folks in the process.

It's wild how they try to frame peaceful protesters as violent agents of foreign influence. Like, come on, that's not even a real thing. It's just an excuse for them to justify their crackdown and crush dissent. 🤦‍♂️

And what really gets me is that these "confessions" are being used to pave the way for executions. I mean, it's basically a game of psychological manipulation - they torture you into confessing something, then use that "evidence" to sentence you to death. 💀 It's just so sickening.

We need to be talking about this more - how can we hold these governments accountable for their human rights abuses? How can we make sure that dissent is protected and not crushed under the weight of propaganda and manipulation? 🤝

OMG, THESE COERCED CONFESSIONS ARE LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A BAD MOVIE!!! 🤯 THEY'RE TOTALLY FAKED AND THE GOVERNMENT IS JUST USING THEM TO COVER ITS TRACKS AND SILENCE ANYONE WHO OPPOSES IT. I MEAN, COME ON, IF YOU'RE GONNA ACCUSE SOMEONE OF CRIMES, AT LEAST MAKE SURE THEY'RE GUILTY!!! 😡 THESE "CONFESSIONS" ARE JUST A WAY FOR THE AUTHORITIES TO GET AWAY WITH STUFF AND KILL THE REPUTATION OF ANYONE WHO SPEAKS OUT. IT'S SO DESPICABLE AND ILLEGAL, LIKE SOMETHING WE SHOULD BE TALKING ABOUT WORLDWIDE!!! 🌎

Ugh I just had the craziest dream last night 🤯, I was on a plane flying over this crazy beautiful island in Greece with crystal clear waters 🌊... I saw dolphins swimming beneath me and it was literally the most relaxing thing ever 😴... anyway back to Iran... I mean what's up with these so-called "confessions" though? They just sound like they're trying to brainwash people into believing whatever propaganda is being spewed at them 🤷‍♀️... and now I'm thinking about how much I love a good Greek salad 🌯, have you guys tried that new Greek restaurant downtown?

🚨 the only way iran's autocrats are gonna keep usin their old trick tactics is if we just keep callin out every time they try it, even when it gets tough. 😒 those 240+ "confessions" on state tv? 📺 straight up propaganda. who do u think they're really goin for w/ all these fake confessions? 👀 its the ppl who are speakin out against their regime and demandin' change. 💥 & let's not even get started on the psychological torture 🤯 - if u think ur gonna make someone confess w/ physical & mental abuse, thats just a recipe 4 false confessions! 📝

Man, what's up with these Iranian authorities? 🤯 They're literally using psychological and physical torture to get people to confess to stuff they didn't do. It's like they think we're all just going to roll over and admit to being spies or something. Newsflash: it doesn't work that way! These "confessions" are totally suspect, IMO. I mean, come on, if you show a guy getting waterboarded on TV and then he's like "Oh yeah, I was planning to kill the president"? Give me a break.

And can we talk about how they're using these coerced confessions to create this false narrative that protesters are violent criminals? It's just so obvious what they're trying to do. They want to make people think dissidents are crazy or something, but it's just not working. The UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran is totally right about this - it's like they're trying to manufacture legitimacy.

I'm also low-key concerned that these tactics are being used at such an "unprecedented scale". Like, what does that even mean? Is that a good thing? No, it means the authorities are getting desperate and using more extreme methods to silence people. And let's not forget all those people who've been killed or arrested in this crackdown - it's just not right.

I guess what I'm saying is... can't we just have some basic human rights and dignity around here? It's time for Iran to stop using these coercive tactics and start listening to its citizens. 🤷‍♂️

I'm literally shaking my head over this 🙄. How can you expect people to believe these "confessions" when they've been tortured into saying whatever you want them to? It's like something out of a bad action movie, but in real life 😩. The whole thing reeks of desperation and fear – the authorities are so scared that their regime is crumbling that they're resorting to this kind of dirty trickery.

And what's really sad is that we get to watch these "confessions" on state TV like some twisted form of entertainment 📺. It's just gross, man. The fact that they're using these coerced confessions as a way to humiliate and discredit dissidents is just disgusting 💔. We need to be calling out this kind of nonsense for what it is – a blatant attempt to silence dissent and maintain control.

I'm all for people having their say and expressing themselves, and I think we should be supporting anyone who's brave enough to stand up against an oppressive regime like Iran's 👊. These "confessions" are just proof that the authorities are more interested in maintaining their power than in listening to the voices of their people 🤷‍♂️.

man this is so messed up 🤯 how can they do this to people? using torture to get them to say stuff they didn't even mean to say is just not cool. these "confessions" are basically fake news designed to make the authorities look good and crush any opposition. the fact that they're airing these on state TV is just disgusting, like, who watches this stuff? it's so scripted and staged.

and can you believe the ages of some of the people being accused? a teenager facing execution over something as ridiculous as following someone on social media? it's insane 🤯 what's going through their minds when they're making these "confessions"? are they just scared or do they really think that's all there is to it?

anyway, this whole situation is super concerning. we need to keep an eye on human rights in Iran and make sure the world knows what's going on. these false confessions can't be ignored 💥

🤯 Just saw a video of some guy getting "forced to confess" on Iranian state TV... dude looks like he's about to pass out from fear 💉 He's saying all these crazy things, like how he was involved in bombings and terrorism 🚫 Newsflash: torture isn't a thing, it never is 😒 We need more people speaking out against this gross human rights abuse. Can't let the gov just use manipulation and coercion to silence its critics... that's not democracy 🙅‍♂️

I'm getting really worried about this forced confession stuff 🤯. Like, how can you even get someone to admit to something they didn't do through torture? It's so despicable. And these state TV sessions are just showing off their total lack of credibility. I mean, who needs a fair trial when you can just torture people into spilling their guts? 🙄 The Iranian authorities are basically using propaganda to justify their brutal crackdown on protesters. Meanwhile, the UN is warning about these "false confessions" and how they're being used to silence dissent. It's like they're trying to create this false narrative that protesters are violent extremists. No wonder thousands got arrested and some even lost their lives in the process 💔. This is just a recipe for human rights abuses on a massive scale. Can we trust what these authorities say when they're willing to do this kind of thing? 🤷‍♂️

omg i just cant even believe what's happening in iran rn 🤯 they're literally using torture & coercion to get people to confess & then showing them on tv like it's some kinda twisted game 📺 these so-called "confessions" are basically propaganda & the UN is saying its all about reinforcing the state's narrative 🚫 i mean, 41k+ ppl arrested & over 240 forced confessions? that's just insane 😱 what really gets me is they're trying to paint peaceful protesters as violent agents of foreign influence 🤷‍♀️ like, come on people, we're not gonna stand for this 💪

🤔 I'm finding it truly distressing that Iranian authorities are resorting to such draconian tactics to silence dissenters. The use of forced confessions, which can be extracted through psychological and physical torture, is a stark reminder of the dangers of state-sponsored repression. 💥 These coerced confessions are essentially fabrications designed to legitimize the regime's actions and create a false narrative about the protesters' motivations. It's unconscionable that the judiciary chief has taken center stage in interrogating detainees, often with sessions broadcast on state TV for maximum effect.

The fact that over 41,000 people have been arrested, with over 240 instances of forced confessions recorded, is a stark indictment of the regime's disregard for human rights. The use of propaganda videos to manufacture legitimacy and create a false narrative is not only morally reprehensible but also undermines any semblance of due process or justice.

It's high time that the international community takes notice of this egregious human rights abuse and holds Iran accountable for its actions. We can't let these televised confessions become normalized; instead, we must amplify the voices of those who are speaking out against such injustices. 💪

💔 This is such a messed up situation! Forced confessions are never okay, but the fact that Iran's authorities are using them on a massive scale is just heartbreaking. It's like they're trying to break people's spirits and make them think anyone who speaks out against them is a threat 🤕.

I mean, have you seen those "confessions" on state TV? They look like scripted propaganda videos, not real confessions from people who've been tortured into saying what the authorities want to hear 😱. The UN special rapporteur is right, these "false confessions" are meant to create a false narrative and intimidate anyone who dares to dissent.

It's also ridiculous that Iranian authorities are trying to blame protesters for violence they didn't even commit 🙄. This is just a classic case of gaslighting, where the state tries to control people's perceptions and make them think they're crazy or violent if they speak out against it 💁‍♀️.

We need to stand up against this kind of manipulation and human rights abuse ASAP! 💪

OMG, like, it's soooo despicable what Iran is doing 🤯 they're literally forcing people to confess under torture and then showing them on TV to make them look bad 😂 I mean, what even is that? It's like a real-life game of cat and mouse, but instead of fun, it's super scary and wrong 💔. And can you believe the UN special rapporteur is saying they're doing this to manufacture legitimacy? Like, come on, Iran! You don't need fake confessions to prove your point 🙄
