Man armed with bow and arrow shot dead by NSW police

A deadly confrontation between NSW police and a man armed with a bow and arrow has ended in tragedy, marking the third fatal incident involving law enforcement this year.

Authorities were called to the man's home in Gunnedah near Tamworth at 1.40pm on Friday after receiving reports of concerns for his welfare. When police arrived, they allegedly spoke to the man outside before he returned inside and emerged with a bow and arrow, prompting them to retreat to their vehicle for safety.

The man then aimed his weapon at police, forcing them to take action in self-defence. A shot was fired, resulting in the man's death. Despite efforts by paramedics to treat him, the man died shortly after arrival at hospital.

This incident marks the third fatality this year involving NSW police. In January, a man died after being pepper-sprayed during an arrest for allegedly breaching the peace following reports of domestic violence in Sydney. Last week, a 49-year-old man was shot dead by officers who were involved in a six-hour standoff with him at his home, believed to be related to a mental health episode.

An investigation into the Gunnedah shooting is now underway, which will be monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

OMG u guys I'm literally shaken after reading about this Gunnedah police incident 😱 like how could it end in tragedy? 🤕 I feel so bad for the poor man's family and all those affected by his actions... and honestly, I don't know if I would've reacted differently either 🤷‍♀️. It's just that sometimes things escalate so fast and you're trying to protect yourself or others but still, it's not worth losing your life over 💔.

and can we talk about how the police were called because of concerns for his welfare? 🤝 like isn't that what they're there for? To help people in need?! It's just such a complex situation and I don't have all the answers 🙄. But one thing's for sure, this incident is gonna be a major topic of discussion in Australia right now 📰.

omg i cant even process this lol like what happens when police have to make such tough calls? its so sad that it ended in tragedy...i mean idk if thats just how things are gonna go from now on but its def a wake up call for everyone about the mental health crisis we're facing rn

idk if anyone else is thinking this but i feel like our society needs more support and resources for people struggling with mental health issues, you know? like having access to proper therapy and counseling without breaking the bank would make a huge difference...and maybe having more de-escalation training for cops too would help prevent these kinds of incidents in the future

anyway just wanted to share my thoughts on this...so heartbreaking 🤕💔

Man 🙏... it's just so sad 😔... three times this year already and it feels like the world is repeating itself 🌎... can't we all just live in harmony? 🤝... you'd think that with all the training they have, officers would know how to handle situations like this better 💪... but I guess you never know what's going on inside someone's head 🤔... anyway, my thoughts are with the family of the victim and the entire community of Gunnedah 🌸💕... hoping that justice is served and we can learn from this tragedy 🙏💡

this is so sad 🤕, can't believe another life lost like this, it's just not right... i mean, what was the man thinking with that bow and arrow? and police got scared enough to take action, but did they have to shoot him? i feel bad for their lives too, officers putting everything on the line every day... can we find a way to resolve these situations without all this drama? 🤔

this is getting crazy what's going on rn? another fatality and it's like they're running out of options i feel bad for the cops but at the same time u gotta wonder if there are better ways to handle situations like this 🤕💔 has anyone thought about de-escalation techniques or counseling services being provided to people in crisis? seems like we're just treating symptoms instead of addressing the root cause 👀💭
