A deadly confrontation between NSW police and a man armed with a bow and arrow has ended in tragedy, marking the third fatal incident involving law enforcement this year.
Authorities were called to the man's home in Gunnedah near Tamworth at 1.40pm on Friday after receiving reports of concerns for his welfare. When police arrived, they allegedly spoke to the man outside before he returned inside and emerged with a bow and arrow, prompting them to retreat to their vehicle for safety.
The man then aimed his weapon at police, forcing them to take action in self-defence. A shot was fired, resulting in the man's death. Despite efforts by paramedics to treat him, the man died shortly after arrival at hospital.
This incident marks the third fatality this year involving NSW police. In January, a man died after being pepper-sprayed during an arrest for allegedly breaching the peace following reports of domestic violence in Sydney. Last week, a 49-year-old man was shot dead by officers who were involved in a six-hour standoff with him at his home, believed to be related to a mental health episode.
An investigation into the Gunnedah shooting is now underway, which will be monitored by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
