Meta has closed three VR studios as part of its metaverse cuts

Meta has laid the axe on three of its virtual reality (VR) studios as part of a broader effort to cut costs and refocus its investment in the metaverse. The move comes as the company shifts its priorities towards wearables, with savings from the closures expected to be reinvested in supporting the growth of this emerging technology.

As a result, employees at Armature, Sanzaru, and Twisted Pixel have been let go, although some are reportedly staying on to work with third-party developers and partners. This shift in focus has led to the closure of Supernatural, a popular VR fitness app that will no longer receive updates with fresh content.

While Meta claims to remain committed to supporting the video game industry, internal communications suggest otherwise. In an internal memo, Oculus Studios director Tamara Sciamanna stated that the company is shifting its investment towards third-party developers and partners to ensure long-term sustainability.

The decision has raised questions about Meta's commitment to supporting a VR ecosystem it has invested heavily in. With no new VR headsets announced since the Quest 3S in 2024, and plans for Horizon OS headsets from Asus and Lenovo put on hold, this latest move may signal a broader scaling back of its metaverse ambitions.

As the tech landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear: Meta's priorities are shifting, and it remains to be seen how this will impact the future of virtual reality.

I'm kinda worried about this VR thingy... I mean, I love playing games on my Oculus like everyone else ๐Ÿค”, but if Meta's not gonna invest in it, what's the point? It seems like they're cutting ties with some pretty cool studios too, Armature, Sanzaru, and Twisted Pixel are all history now ๐Ÿ˜ข. And Supernatural, that VR fitness app was so popular! I hope whoever is staying on to work with third-party devs can keep it alive or something ๐Ÿคž

Just read about Meta's VR studios getting axed ๐Ÿค”... seems like they're trying to save some cash, but at what cost? I mean, Supernatural was a popular fitness app and now it's just gonna fade away ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ’”. Don't get me wrong, wearables are cool and all, but VR is still kinda new tech, you know? It'd be sad if they were really cutting back on their investments... wouldn't that hurt the whole metaverse thing? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next ๐Ÿ‘€

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ just read that Meta is chopping 3 of its VR studios... like what even happened to them? ๐Ÿค” i mean, they were investing so much in the metaverse and now it's like "oh nope, let's cut costs" ๐Ÿ˜’ savin' $$ at the expense of all those awesome VR devs... poor guys! ๐Ÿ™ armature, sanzaru, twisted pixel - all gone ๐ŸŽ‰ guess that means supernatural fitness app is toast too? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ meta claims to still be down with gaming but internal memo says otherwise ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ’ธ not sure what's goin on over there but it don't sit right w/ me ๐Ÿ˜

I'm kinda surprised about this move from Meta ๐Ÿค”. I mean, they've been investing so much in VR and the metaverse, it feels like they're just gonna cut off some of their own branches ๐ŸŒณ. Supernatural was a popular app for sure, but I guess that's what happens when you gotta make tough decisions to stay afloat ๐Ÿ’ธ.

I do think this move makes sense from a business perspective, though ๐Ÿ‘€. Wearables and VR are two big markets, and Meta needs to prioritize its investments if it wants to stay competitive ๐Ÿ†. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out in the long run and whether they can still make the metaverse thing work ๐Ÿค.

What do you guys think? Do you think Meta's decision is a smart move or are they just losing steam ๐Ÿ’ก?

omg, meta is like toying with our VR dreams ๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿ‘€ so they're cutting costs by axing three studios and now supernatural fitness app is just gonna fade away? ๐Ÿค” i get that wearables are getting more attention but what about all the devs who invested their hearts into these projects? ๐Ÿ’” anyway, i heard some of them got to stay on with third-party devs, so that's a lil silver lining ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ’ป this move does make me wonder if meta's still all in on the metaverse thing... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ they've been quiet about new headsets since 2024 and now plans are put on hold ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘€ fingers crossed they don't just disappear altogether ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿค” I mean, what's up with Meta being all like "we're gonna cut costs and refocus on wearables"... ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Like, isn't VR supposed to be the future or something? ๐Ÿ˜‚ It feels like they're just kinda... abandoning it now? ๐Ÿ’ธ I get that they need to make money and stuff, but Supernatural was a popular app! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ How's anyone gonna keep playing fitness games in regular reality when they can just wear a VR headset at home? ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ It's all so confusing... are we just gonna have to wait and see what happens next? ๐Ÿ“บ

man, have you ever tried those new VR fitness apps? like Supernatural, I used to love playing those outdoor tracks in virtual mountains ๐Ÿ”๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ but now they just feel so... basic. remember when we were all talking about how immersive tech was gonna change everything and now it's just another thing that gets cut back because of cost savings? ๐Ÿ’ธ anyway, I've been meaning to try out those new wearables that Meta is investing in... heard they're pretty cool ๐Ÿค”

OMG, I'm kinda shocked by this news ๐Ÿคฏ! Like, I get that companies have to make tough decisions to cut costs and refocus their investments, but it's still sad to see three studios let go ๐Ÿ’”. Armature, Sanzaru, and Twisted Pixel were all part of the VR studio ecosystem for a while, so it's weird that Supernatural is being dropped too ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ.

I mean, I'm not a huge gamer, but I know how important VR fitness apps are for some people ๐Ÿ’ช. It's like, what's next? Are they gonna kill off Oculus too? ๐Ÿ˜ฌ I know Meta still claims to be all about supporting the video game industry, but it's hard not to wonder if this is just another case of them playing it cool on the outside while scaling back their ambitions ๐Ÿค”.

I'm curious to see how this whole thing plays out. Will they come out with some new VR headsets soon? And what does this mean for the metaverse as a whole? ๐Ÿคฏ

omg did u hear about meta laying off 3 vr studios like armature sanzaru and twisted pixel?? ๐Ÿคฏ they're just gonna save up all that cash to invest in wearables lol what's good with metaverse if we dont have any new vr headsets? ๐Ÿ“บ the quest 3s came out like last year tho so i cant even remember when thats was ๐Ÿค” and now supernatual is getting axed too ๐Ÿค• i hope meta realizes that vr fitness is a thing rn ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ

The recent shake-up at Meta's VR studios has got me thinking... with the company reiterating its commitment to supporting the video game industry, yet laying off three studios that have been instrumental in developing immersive experiences ๐Ÿค”. It seems like a classic case of 'beating a dead horse' - investing heavily in something that's not yielding the desired returns.

The decision to focus on wearables and third-party developers feels like a pragmatic move, but it raises questions about Meta's long-term vision for VR ๐Ÿ•น๏ธ. With no new headsets announced since 2024, and plans put on hold, I'm left wondering if this is just a case of 'VR fatigue' ๐Ÿ˜ด.

What's interesting is that some employees are being let go while still working with third-party devs - it's almost as if Meta is trying to outsource its VR woes ๐Ÿค. One thing's for sure, though: the future of virtual reality hangs in the balance, and only time will tell how this all plays out ๐Ÿ”ฎ.

๐Ÿค” meta's move is like ๐Ÿ”„ shifting gears - from focusing on VR to wearables ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ! gotta wonder what happened to Supernatural fitness app ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ... was that a casualty? ๐Ÿ’” some r say 3rd party devs will keep it alive tho ๐Ÿคž but idk about meta's long term plans for metaverse ๐ŸŒ is it still ๐Ÿš€ going or just cruising at low speed?

Ugh, I'm so done with Meta's decision ๐Ÿคฏ. They're just abandoning their VR studios left and right without even giving them a chance to adapt. Armature, Sanzaru, Twisted Pixel... all gone? It's like they thought these studios were just disposable ๐Ÿ’ธ. And now Supernatural is getting the boot too? What's next? I mean, I get it, wearables are where it's at right now, but can't they still support VR for the sake of innovation? ๐Ÿค” They're basically cutting off their own nose to spite their face ๐Ÿ‘ƒ. Mark my words, this move will backfire and we'll be stuck with a barren metaverse landscape ๐Ÿ˜. And don't even get me started on Oculus... Tamara Sciamanna's memo just says it all - they're more concerned with saving money than investing in the future ๐Ÿ’ธ. I'm still holding out hope that they'll come to their senses, but for now, I'm just shook ๐Ÿคฏ.

I'm kinda disappointed in this news... meta was all about VR innovation but now they're cutting costs ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿ‘‹. It's like they're pulling back from their own game ๐Ÿ˜”. Don't get me wrong, wearables are cool and all, but it feels like they're abandoning ship on the metaverse ๐Ÿšซ. What's the point of having a virtual world if you don't even support it with fresh content? ๐Ÿค” It's also weird that they're not even releasing new headsets since the Quest 3S... seems like they've lost momentum ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Will we see any changes in their VR strategy now? ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿค” so meta's like cutting costs in vr and putting more into wearables? that seems kinda weird considering they've been all in on metaverse... ๐Ÿ“Š now i'm curious about what they really want from these third-party devs... are they just gonna help make money or also contribute to the metaverse growth? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ also, supernatural fitness app is gonna be a ghost app now? that's no bueno for people who actually use it ๐Ÿ˜”

OMG, can't believe Meta's killing off Supernatural ๐Ÿ˜ž, that was a sick VR fitness app! It's like they're abandoning ship on their own metaverse plans ๐Ÿšข๐Ÿ’ฅ. I get that costs gotta be cut, but this feels like a major strategic misstep ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. What if they just scaled back instead of shutting down entire studios? That would've been a more sustainable move ๐Ÿค‘. Now we're left wondering what's next for Meta and the metaverse ๐Ÿค”...

Omg, sad news for all those Armature, Sanzaru, and Twisted Pixel folks who just lost their jobs ๐Ÿค•๐Ÿ‘‹!! Can't believe Supernatural is getting shut down too, that was a great fitness app ๐Ÿ˜” Meta's gonna need to bring back some of these talented devs or risk losing the momentum they had in VR gaming ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ’ฅ And I don't get why they're cutting costs now when wearables are all about innovation and investment... hope they can refocus and make it work out for everyone involved ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ

You know what's crazy? I remember when VR was all about immersive experiences like Supernatural ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐ŸŽฎ. It was all about creating a community that'd push you to new heights (literally!) and challenge your limits. Now, it feels like Meta's just phasing it out in favor of wearables... what happened to the thrill of exploring new worlds? ๐Ÿค” I mean, I'm sure those devs at Armature, Sanzaru, and Twisted Pixel are super appreciative of the opportunities they got, but it still stings knowing Supernatural's basically going dark. ๐ŸŽฅ The Quest 3S came out last year, what's next?! Did we already forget about Horizon OS? ๐Ÿ˜•
