Pakistani parliament votes to give army chief new powers and legal immunity

Pakistan's parliament has approved a controversial constitutional amendment that will give its army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, unprecedented powers, effectively undermining democracy in the country. The bill grants Munir immunity from prosecution for life, allowing him to rule with impunity, while also expanding his authority over the military and judiciary.

Critics argue that this move is a "funeral for democracy" as it limits the independence of the supreme court and establishes a new federal constitutional court that will be controlled by the executive. The decision to appoint judges to this court will rest solely with the president, removing any accountability processes.

"This effectively has set us on the way to a lifelong dictatorship in Pakistan," said Salahuddin Ahmed, a constitutional lawyer. "Completely destroys any notion of independence in the judiciary in Pakistan."

The amendment has been met with widespread criticism from opposition parties and civil society groups, who argue that it serves only to enshrine military rule and push Pakistan further into authoritarianism.

Pakistan's parliament has struggled to pass meaningful reforms since the country transitioned to democracy in 2008. However, this latest move suggests a significant shift towards militarization, with Munir now holding power akin to head of state, having met with US President Donald Trump on two occasions.

The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party boycotted the vote, and many of its leaders are behind bars, further eroding their influence. The bill was passed in a record-breaking few hours, with only four lawmakers voting against it, highlighting the weakness of the ruling coalition government.

Asim Munir has been army chief since 2022, and his increased powers have sparked concerns about the erosion of civilian control. This move is seen as a significant challenge to democracy in Pakistan, which has struggled to maintain its fragile institutions amidst pressure from powerful military leaders.

πŸ˜’ I'm telling ya, this new amendment is gonna be a disaster for Pakistans' democratic future πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. They're basically saying "peace out" to any chance of having an independent judiciary and supreme court. It's like, what's the point of even having a democracy if you can just hand-pick judges who'll do your bidding? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ And don't even get me started on this whole "funeral for democracy" thing πŸ˜‚... it's more like a bad reality TV show where Pakistan's politicians are trying to out-do each other in the 'who can be most subservient to the military' contest. πŸ“Ί

oh boy, sounds like pakistan's parliament is really showing off their democratic chops by letting the army chief basically become the ruler πŸ™„... i mean, who needs checks and balances when you've got a strong leader like field marshal asim munir, right? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ it's not like they're pushing the country further into authoritarianism or anything... *cough* pakistan has always been a beacon of democracy, right? 😴 anyway, can't wait to see how this whole "lifespan of immunity" thing plays out... i'm sure it'll be super fun watching the supreme court just rubber-stamp everything the president tells them πŸ“

omg I'm so shocked this happened 🀯 how did parliament even manage to get this passed with only 4 people voting against it? and now the army chief is basically untouchable? that's super concerning for democracy in Pakistan πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ. I don't blame the opposition party for boycotting the vote, they must have seen it was a lost cause πŸ˜”. it's like they're just playing along with this militarization thing and it's so sad πŸ’”.

πŸ˜• I'm really worried about what's happening in Pakistan right now... I mean, I get that some people think the army chief should have more power, but this seems like a big overreach 🀯. Giving him immunity from prosecution for life is just crazy talk! πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ It's like they're setting up a system where no one can hold him accountable for anything he does.

I've read some comments saying that it's the end of democracy in Pakistan, and I don't know if that's an exaggeration or not πŸ€”. But what I do know is that this move is going to make things really tough for civilians in Pakistan who are trying to hold their leaders accountable.

It's like they're choosing between having a strong military or having a democratic government... but can't they have both? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It seems like the ruling party just wants to do what the army wants, without any checks and balances. And that's not good for anyone! πŸ‘Ž

Ugh, this is insane! 🀯 I mean, who needs democracy when you can have an army chief with lifetime immunity? It's like they're trying to create a dictator for real πŸ•΄οΈβ€β™‚οΈ. I'm seriously worried about the future of Pakistan and its people. How are they going to hold someone in power accountable if they can just make themselves above the law? 😩 It's so frustrating, they've been struggling to pass meaningful reforms since 2008 and now this... it's like they're taking two steps forward and three steps back πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ. I don't know what's more concerning, the fact that they're undermining democracy or that they can do it with such ease πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

I'm not surprised by this move at all πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. Politicians always seem to find ways to consolidate power and undermine the systems that keep them accountable. This is just another example of how democracy can be a facade in places like Pakistan, where the powerful are more interested in maintaining their grip on control.

It's hard not to see this as a step backwards for Pakistan, especially after all the struggles they've had to maintain their democratic institutions. The fact that opposition parties are basically powerless and many of their leaders are behind bars is just another example of how the system can be rigged against those who want to hold people in power accountable.

I do hope that people in Pakistan will speak out against this move and demand more transparency and accountability from their government. We should also be keeping a close eye on how this plays out and whether it leads to any real reforms or just more of the same old authoritarianism πŸ€”

omg this is so worrisome! πŸ€• the fact that they're basically giving the army chief more power than anyone else in the country is super concerning for me. i mean, if he's supposed to be above the law and can't get prosecuted, it's like a big ol' red flag waving in my face 🚨 how are we supposed to trust our government when one person has so much control?

and it's not just that, but now they're also limiting the independence of the supreme court? that's like, a huge problem for me because i think judges should be able to make their own decisions without someone else breathing down their necks πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ

i feel like this is really bad news for pakistan and its people. it's like, they're taking away all the checks and balances that are supposed to keep anyone in power in check. i hope everyone can come together and stop this from happening 🀞

omg this is so worrying 🀯 pakistan is already in a state of emergency how do they expect us to have an independent judiciary now? the fact that the president will be in charge of appointing judges is just mind-blowing 😲 it's like they're trying to set up a permanent dictatorship. and what's with asim munir meeting with trump on two occasions?! 🀝 is this some kind of agreement between the military and usa? i don't think pakistan can survive with this kind of militarization...

omg, this is getting outta hand 🀯! paki parliament is literally letting the army chief be the real boss now. it's like they're saying "screw democracy" and "hello, dictatorship" πŸŽ‰πŸ‘Š. i mean, what's next? is the pm gonna get replaced by a military general too? πŸ˜‚ this whole thing is just a nightmare for pakistani people. how are they supposed to trust their government when the army chief has more power than anyone else? πŸ˜’ i feel like this is going to be a total disaster πŸŒͺ️.

Ugh, just what we need... another country where the military thinks they're above the law πŸ™„. I mean, who needs checks and balances when you've got a power-hungry army chief running things? It's like the old saying goes: "when in doubt, just give them more power" πŸ’ͺ. Pakistan's parliament is basically just rubber-stamping whatever Asim Munir wants, which is super concerning for democracy and human rights 🀯. And let's not forget, this guy has already met with Trump... talk about a legacy of influence πŸ˜‚. I guess you could say this is the ultimate symbol of military rule: "Hey, we're so confident in our power that we don't even need to pretend to be accountable" πŸ’β€β™€οΈ. What a great look for democracy πŸ™„.

πŸ€• Man, this is some crazy stuff! Giving the army chief absolute power is like something out of a thriller movie - you know, like "The Manchurian Candidate" πŸŽ₯ where they manipulate someone into becoming a puppet for their own evil plans? In Pakistan's case, it's more like a real-life "Die Hard" πŸ’£, but instead of terrorists, it's the military that's taking over.

I mean, think about it - if Asim Munir can do whatever he wants and nobody can hold him accountable, that's basically a recipe for disaster. And now they're trying to tell us that this is all part of democracy? πŸ™„ Come on! It feels like they're just trying to set the stage for some kind of military coup or something.

I'm not surprised that the opposition party boycotted the vote, though - when you see something as suspicious as this, you can't trust it. And what's with the president getting to appoint judges without any oversight? That's just a recipe for corruption and abuse of power.

Anyway, I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out... but I'm not optimistic πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

I'm freaking out over this 🀯 news in Pakistan... like, what's happening with their parliament? They're basically giving the army chief way too much power and undermining democracy in the country πŸ€–. It's crazy that they're basically creating a lifeline for dictatorship 🚫, and I mean, who wants to live in a place where the military is in charge 24/7? 😩

I'm all about the #resist movement πŸ’ͺ when it comes to this kind of thing. The opposition parties are right to boycott this vote and speak out against it πŸ—£οΈ. We can't just sit back and let authoritarianism take over a country with such a rich history and culture 🌎.

And what's up with Asim Munir? He seems like a slick operator, but having him rule for life is just too much 🀯. I mean, at least in the US we have checks and balances to keep our presidents in check πŸ‘€. It's like they're playing a real-life Hunger Games game over there... no mercy, no quarter πŸ’₯.

I'm not even going to get into how this affects the global stage 🌍. Can't we all just agree that democracy is the best way forward? 🀝 Not sure if I have any answers, but one thing's for sure – I'll be keeping an eye on this situation πŸ‘€.

🀣 I mean, what's next? Giving the army chief his own Netflix special? "Asim Munir: Army Chief and Supreme Ruler" 🀣 I'm not kidding, this is a joke right out of a bad comedy movie! But seriously, folks, this is like, super serious stuff. I guess that's why they call it 'controversial'... because everyone's gotta be on the same page (just kidding, who needs consensus in Pakistan, right?) 🀣

Ugh what's going on in Pak πŸ€• this is super scary! they're basically giving their army chief way too much power and it's like, totally undermining democracy πŸ’” I don't get why they can't just make sure the judges are independent and fair, you know? but now it seems like only the president gets to decide who sits on that court πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ and that's so not cool. what's next? 😳

What's going on with Pakistan now? 🀯 They're basically making their army chief a dictator, it's so not cool... Asim Munir already had some power, but this is like, next level πŸš€. The opposition party boycotted the vote, which is even more messed up. I mean, what's the point of having democracy if you can just pass laws without anyone holding you accountable? πŸ’” It's like they're trying to create a military junta or something... πŸ€– Not sure how this will affect their relationship with the US either, but it can't be good for Pakistan's global reputation. 🌎 We should really keep an eye on this one... πŸ‘€

omg this is so bad 🀯 pakistan is literally killing its own democracy 😭 asim munir has already got too much power and now he's gonna rule for life? no thanks πŸ’” it's like they're trying to recreate some kind of military dictatorship or something 🚫 how are they even getting away with this? did the opposition not show up to vote or what? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i'm literally shaking thinking about the implications of this... pakistan needs to get its act together ASAP πŸ’ͺ

Ugh, what's going on with Pakistan man? 🀯 They're basically giving their army chief all the power and no one can touch him 😑. It's like they're playing with fire here, undermining democracy and all that. The opposition party even boycotted the vote, which is crazy πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, you'd think they'd want to stop this kind of thing from happening in their country. Anyway, it looks like Pakistan is taking a major step back towards military rule 🚫. What's the point of even having democracy if the military just gets to call the shots? πŸ’”

OMG, what's going on with Pakistan?! 🀯 They're basically handing over their entire country to the army chief? 😱 I mean, I get it, they want stability and all that, but come on! This is like a step back into the dark ages of military rule. The opposition party boycotted the vote and now many of its leaders are in jail... it's like they're suffocating any form of dissent.

And what about Asim Munir? Does he even care about democracy at this point? πŸ€” He's basically above the law, with immunity from prosecution for life. It's a nightmare! The fact that the president gets to appoint judges to this new court without any accountability is just straight up worrying. This country needs some serious reform ASAP!

I mean, I know Pakistan has had its fair share of power struggles and whatnot, but this is just ridiculous. Can't they see how this is setting them up for a lifelong dictatorship? πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ It's like they're playing right into the hands of those who want to undermine democracy in their country. Ugh, I'm so frustrated! 😩

OMG, did u guys see that news about pakistan?? 🀯 i dont get why theyre doin this tho... cant they just have a normal gov like other countries? πŸ€” it sounds super unfair 2 me... & what if somethin goes wrong? 🚨 then who's gonna stop him? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ i mean, im no expert but it seems like a recipe 4 disaster 😱 & im all for ppl having free speech & expression in their country πŸ™Œ not being able 2 speak out against the gov is super scary 2 me... 😬
