Phillies release 22-year-old pitcher after 4 seasons

Philadelphia Phillies Release 22-Year-Old Pitcher with Promising Past

The Philadelphia Phillies have released right-handed pitcher Maxwel Hernandez, a 22-year-old Dominican Republic native who signed with the team in 2021. Hernandez had an impressive start to his career, dominating in the Dominican Summer League as an 18-year-old rookie. He led the DSL Phillies White in strikeouts with a 0.72 ERA and helped the team win the 2022 league championship.

Hernandez's performance warranted recognition, earning him a spot on Baseball America's Rookie Complex All-Star team in 2022. However, his stock has taken a hit since then. In 2023 and 2024, he struggled with a higher ERA, posting 4.95 and 5.35 respectively.

While Hernandez showed flashes of brilliance, the Phillies have deemed him not good enough to contribute at the big league level. His release may come as a surprise to some, given his impressive minor league numbers. Nevertheless, it's a reminder that development is a long process, and not all prospects pan out.

Hernandez's departure is part of a larger wave of roster moves by the Phillies, who are reportedly exploring other options in free agency. Despite this, the team remains committed to building through their farm system, as evident from their interest in Bo Bichette on Monday. The future of Hernandez and his fellow prospects remains uncertain, but one thing is clear โ€“ only time will tell if he can regain form and become a significant contributor for the Phillies.

omg I cant believe they released him already! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ i mean he had some awesome seasons in the DSL but then things took a turn and he struggled in the big leagues ๐Ÿค”. its def not easy being a prospect, you gotta stay on top of your game or risk getting benched or worse. idk what went wrong with maxwel but maybe he needs a fresh start somewhere else ๐Ÿ’ช. i love how the phillies are still invested in their farm system tho, they need to nurture these young talent ๐Ÿ˜Š. only time will tell if maxwel can bounce back and become a star player ๐Ÿคž.

idk what's going on here... 22 years old and they already cut him loose? that's crazy! i mean, i get it, development is hard and all that, but 4.95 era in 2023? he should at least get some more time to prove himself. did they even have a chance to work with him on his mechanics or was it just a "he's not good enough" decision? need some proof before i start doubting the guy ๐Ÿค”

Awwww so sad 4 Maxwel ๐Ÿค• hope he can bounce back & prove himself again ๐Ÿ’ช MLB can be tough, gotta give him another shot in the minors or abroad ๐ŸŒŽ maybe find his swing again? ๐ŸฅŠ fingers crossed for this talented young pitcher! ๐Ÿ‘

man this is sad for maxwel hernandez ๐Ÿ˜” he had so much promise ๐ŸŒŸ coming out of the domincan summer league was fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ but it looks like he just couldn't find his groove in the big leagues ๐Ÿ’” hopefully he'll bounce back and show them what he's got again ๐Ÿคž these kids go through so much with the development process it's crazy how quickly things can turn around โฐ sometimes you gotta feel for 'em a bit ๐Ÿค—

this is super sad ๐Ÿค•... i mean, maxwel hernandez was like this talented kid who came up through the ranks and had everyone hyped about him in 2022. it's crazy that even with all that promise, he just couldn't find his footing at the big league level. i feel bad for the guy, because it's clear he had a lot of potential... maybe he'll get picked up by another team and turn things around? ๐Ÿคž only time will tell

๐Ÿค” I'm so frustrated with the Phillies' decision... Maxwel Hernandez had all the tools to be a star pitcher! He was on fire in the DSL and then just fell off a cliff in the minors ๐Ÿ“‰ 4.95 and 5.35 ERA are not what you expect from someone who was a Rookie Complex All-Star ๐Ÿ™„ I know development takes time, but it feels like they gave up too soon... did they not see any potential left in him? ๐Ÿ’” Now he's just another lost prospect ๐Ÿ˜”

๐Ÿค” Maxwel Hernandez's release is defo a bummer ๐Ÿค• I mean, the dude had some serious potential, was crushing it in the DSL, and even made it to Rookie Complex All-Star team in 2022! ๐ŸŽ‰ But, you know how it goes - minor league stats don't always translate to the big leagues ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Still, gotta give him props for his work ethic and dedication to the sport ๐Ÿ’ช. And I'm curious to see what's next for Hernandez... is he gonna bounce back and become a legit contributor or what? ๐Ÿคž

I MEAN COME ON! MAXWEL HERNANDEZ IS JUST 22 YEARS OLD AND THEY'RE ALREADY CUTTING HIM LOOSE? THAT'S PRETTY DISAPPOINTING, ESPECIALLY AFTER HOW PROMISING HE SEEMED WHEN HE WAS A ROOKIE. I GET IT, DEVELOPMENT TAKES TIME, BUT IT LOOKS LIKE THE PHILLIES JUST GAVE UP ON HIM TOO QUICKLY ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. HE COULD STILL TURN HIS CAREER AROUND, BUT RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS LIKE HE'S FACING AN UPHILL BATTLE TO GET BACK TO FORM ๐Ÿ‘Ž.

๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ‘Ž I'm so bummed for Maxwel Hernandez ๐Ÿค•! He had such huge promise coming out and I was really rooting for him ๐Ÿ’ช. 4.95 ERA in '23? That's like, not even close to what I expected from a guy with his skills ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. I mean, you can't help but wonder if the coaching or whatever was holding him back ๐Ÿค”. It's crazy how these things happen in baseball - one day you're on top of the world, and the next you're packing your bags ๐Ÿ’ผ. Still got faith in Hernandez tho ๐Ÿ’ซ, he'll bounce back for sure!

Ugh, I feel bad for this kid ๐Ÿค• Maxwel Hernandez had some serious promise at 18, dominating in the DSL and helping his team win a league championship ๐Ÿ†. But now, after struggling in the minors, he's been released by the Phillies ๐Ÿšซ. It's a tough reminder that not all prospects can make it to the big leagues ๐ŸŒณ. The MLB is so competitive, and it's easy for players to get lost in the shuffle ๐Ÿ’”. I just hope Hernandez finds his groove again soon and gets another shot at making it big โญ๏ธ.

๐Ÿ˜ฉ๐Ÿค” I'm actually kinda surprised they let him go. He had some amazing stuff as a rookie and I thought for sure he'd be like, a key player on the team by now. But at the same time, you gotta remember that pro ball is super competitive and not every kid can make it. It's crazy how fast their stock can drop and then just drop off completely. ๐Ÿ˜” His numbers aren't terrible, but sometimes I think the system just isn't made for these guys. Like, he had some flashes of brilliance in the minors, but couldn't seem to carry that over... ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Guess you'll just have to wait and see if he can make a comeback somewhere else? ๐Ÿคž

๐Ÿ˜” what's up with this kid? 22 and already being tossed aside like yesterday's trash ๐Ÿšฎ? I feel bad for him, because that rookie season was insane! 0.72 ERA in DSL? That's unheard of for an 18-yr-old newbie ๐Ÿคฏ...and now he's stuck in limbo ๐Ÿ”„. Can't help but wonder what went wrong between then and now ๐Ÿค”... maybe they just got too much pressure on him at a young age? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ still gotta believe in the kid, though ๐Ÿ’•

Ugh I feel so bad for maxwel hernandez lol he had such a promising start to his career ๐Ÿค• like what happened? 22 years old and he's already being released from the big leagues, that's crazy talk! I mean we've all been there with our school projects, when everything just seems to go wrong right before the deadline ๐Ÿ“. But this is on another level, at least in school you can try again tomorrow ๐Ÿ™. The Phillies should've stuck with him, maybe he needed more time to develop his skills ๐Ÿค”. Now it's up to him to regain form and show them what he's made of ๐Ÿ’ช. Fingers crossed for him!

omg what happened to maxwel hernandez ๐Ÿค” i mean we all saw that dominant start with him back in 2021 & it's crazy how quickly things changed his numbers went from impressing everyone to struggling mightily in just two seasons ๐Ÿ“‰๐Ÿšซ still gotta feel bad for the dude, been through so much hype only to have it fade away hope he gets another shot somewhere soon ๐Ÿ’ช

I don't usually comment but I feel kinda bad for Maxwel Hernandez ๐Ÿ˜”. He was so hyped after that 2022 season and it's disheartening to see him struggle with his ERA. The thing is, minor league numbers aren't always a 100% indicator of success in the big leagues ๐Ÿค”. Maybe he just needed more time to adjust? I remember when I was playing baseball in high school, I was so focused on crushing home runs but ended up being super inconsistent ๐Ÿ˜…. So, maybe Maxwel can take some tips from me... not that he needs advice from a 22-year-old who can barely hit the ball ๐Ÿคฃ. Anyways, wish him all the best and hope he bounces back strong ๐Ÿ’ช!

I feel bad for Maxwel, he had such promise ๐Ÿ˜”. I get it, the Phillies gotta make tough decisions, but 22 is still pretty young. You'd think he'd have more time to bounce back from his struggles ๐Ÿค•. I'm not surprised they released him, but it's weird that they didn't give him another shot in the minors or a chance to prove himself in the minors again ๐Ÿค”. Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next with him ๐Ÿ‘€.

idk what's goin on with maxwel hernandez ๐Ÿค”. like, one day u r dominatin in the DSL, next ur ERA's 4.95 & u r gettin released ๐Ÿ˜ณ. i get it, dev is hard, but aint he still only 22? cant u give him another shot? maybe theres somethin in his game thats not translate to the bigs ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. or maybe hes just not meant 2 b a phillie โšพ๏ธ. either way, hope hes gets picked up by someone els & can show em wut he's got ๐Ÿ’ช

can't believe they let him go ๐Ÿคฏ maxwel hernandez had all the makings of a star pitcher and now he's just another forgotten prospect in the minors... maybe he'll bounce back from this release and prove ppl wrong ๐ŸŸ๏ธ
