'Small mercies': north London cafe evictions paused after legal challenge

Battle for London's Cafes Halted as Landlord's Eviction Threat Subsides

In a reprieve for three north London cafes, their owners have won a temporary stay of execution after successfully challenging the eviction notice issued by the City of London Corporation. The corporation, which manages green spaces including Hampstead Heath, had threatened to evict Patrick Matthews and Emma Fernandez from their cafes at Parliament Hill Lido, Queen's Park, and Highgate Wood.

The couple, who have run the businesses for several years, accused the corporation of running a commercial exercise in the retendering process, with no regard for transparency or fairness. They claimed that the authority's decision to award new leases to an Australian-inspired chain, Daisy Green, was motivated by a desire to raise money rather than serve the local community.

Matthews and Fernandez have now been informed through their lawyers that they do not need to vacate the premises next week, which would have been impractical for their business. However, the corporation has warned that it may still seek a court order to repossess the cafes if necessary.

The couple's victory has been met with relief from local residents and customers, many of whom have shown support for their efforts through social media and crowdfunding campaigns. Over 22,000 people have signed a petition calling for the corporation to retain the current cafe operators, while Matthews and Fernandez have raised over ยฃ9,000 to fund their legal action.

The controversy has also attracted high-profile backing from actors Benedict Cumberbatch and James McAvoy, who have publicly backed the campaign. Daisy Green, the new operator of two of the cafes, has promised to retain existing staff and pay them the London living wage, as well as purchase equipment from the current operators where possible.

While the reprieve is temporary, it has given Matthews and Fernandez a much-needed breathing space to continue their fight against the corporation's decision. The fate of the cafes now hangs in the balance, with the outcome uncertain until further notice.

I gotta say, this whole thing got me thinking... ๐Ÿค” Those cafe owners didn't give up when faced with an eviction notice, and it paid off! It shows that even in tough times, your voice can be heard and your fight can make a difference. The community came together to support them, and now they get to keep their businesses going. That's the power of collective effort, right? ๐Ÿ’ช It also makes me think about the importance of standing up for what you believe in. Those cafe owners weren't afraid to challenge the corporation's decision, even if it meant going against the odds. That takes a lot of courage! So yeah, this reprieve is a win, but it's also a reminder that we've got to keep pushing forward and fighting for what's right. ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿค” so like I was thinking about this whole thing and I feel bad for these cafe owners, Patrick & Emma. I mean, they've been running these places for years and they're just trying to make a living. It's not fair that the corporation is threatening to evict them over some bureaucratic stuff.

I'm glad that the community has come together to support them, though! ๐Ÿ™Œ 22k signatures on that petition? That's amazing. And I love how Benedict & James have gotten involved - it shows that there are people who actually care about what's going on in London.

But at the same time, I get why the corporation is doing what they're doing. They've got to make a buck, right? ๐Ÿ’ธ And Daisy Green seems like they're trying to do things the right way... even if it's not exactly what Patrick & Emma had planned.

So yeah, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens next. ๐Ÿคž Does anyone know for sure how this is going to play out?

omg u guys i told u something was fishy about this whole situation... its not just about the cafes, its about the money... daisy green is an aussie chain and they're just gonna bring in more cash, but what about the community?? and dont even get me started on the "transparency" and "fairness"... corporation's word is not gold ๐Ÿค‘๐Ÿคฅ

omg u guys ๐Ÿ˜‚ i'm literally so happy 4 these ppl!! they're bein totally unfair 2 them! daisy green is like just a big corp trying 2 get rich off london's culture ๐Ÿค‘ meanwhile patrik & emma r jus tryna keep it real & serve the community ๐Ÿค cant wait 2 c how dis all plays out tho ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿคž I'm glad to see these two cafe owners got a break from being evicted lol, I mean it would've been super sad if they lost their businesses. I was worried about them too after reading all that drama online ๐Ÿ“Š The whole thing just seemed fishy with the City Corp wanting to sell out to some new chain...but I'm happy to see they're fighting back and getting support from the community ๐Ÿค— Benedict Cumberbatch even got involved, I love him for it ๐Ÿ˜ Still not sure how this will all play out but fingers crossed these cafes stay in London ๐Ÿ’•

OMG ๐Ÿคฏ I'm SOOO relieved for Patrick and Emma!!! They were literally fighting for their livelihoods and it's amazing they got a reprieve!! ๐Ÿ’ช The City Corp is like, trying to shut them down just because they want to make some cash from the leases... what even is that?! ๐Ÿ˜ก Like, don't they care about the community or something? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ I'm loving how the people have come together to support them too - 22k signatures on a petition is insane! ๐Ÿš€ And it's awesome that Benedict and James are backing them too... let's keep this momentum going!!! ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Omg I'm so relieved for Patrick & Emma ๐Ÿ™Œ! Those guys have been fighting tooth & nail for what feels like forever, and it's amazing to see their determination paying off. Like, what even is the point of the City of London Corp trying to kick them out? The community needs those cafes more than ever, you feel? ๐Ÿค” And I love that Benedict & James are backing them - talk about solidarity! ๐Ÿ’ช Now, let's get back to DIY mode and figure out how we can support these amazing small businesses ๐Ÿต๐Ÿ’•

๐Ÿค” so the corporation is trying to make some cash by selling off these cafes but they're basically being really unfair about it too... like awarding the leases to this new chain without even considering what's best for the community ๐Ÿค‘. on one hand, i can see why they'd wanna raise money for their green spaces, but you gotta think about the impact on local businesses and people who depend on them ๐Ÿ‘ฅ.

anyway, glad that the cafes got a temporary reprieve, it'll give those owners some time to figure out what's next ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. and yeah, 22k+ signatures on that petition is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ... shows how much people care about these businesses. fingers crossed they can find a solution that works for everyone ๐Ÿ’ป

OMG, this is insane! ๐Ÿคฏ Like, who does the City of London Corp think they are? Trying to kick out these two amazing cafe owners just because they didn't wanna sell to an Aussie-inspired chain? It's all about profit over people, right? ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿšซ Not cool. I'm loving the fact that local residents and customers have come together to show support for Matthews & Fernandez - we need more of this kind of community spirit! ๐ŸŒŸ The 22k+ signatures on that petition are huge, btw... fingers crossed they can keep fighting the good fight #SaveOurCafes #FairnessOverProfit #CommunityFirst ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿ™ I'm glad to see that the cafe owners were able to win a temporary reprieve from eviction! It's crazy how quickly corporations can make decisions that affect local businesses and communities. ๐Ÿคฏ The fact that there was even an eviction threat in the first place is just unbelievable... I mean, who needs that kind of stress? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ Anyway, it's awesome that local residents have come together to support the owners and raise awareness about this issue. I'm sure it'll be a wild ride from here on out... Fingers crossed for the owners! ๐Ÿ’ช

๐Ÿคž just when u thought things couldn't get any local businesses having a hard time ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ so these 2 cafe owners managed to stave off eviction lol how did they do it? ๐Ÿค‘ anyway its not just about them, its about the community who wants to see these places stay open & supported by locals ๐Ÿ’– now lets keep this momentum going & make sure those cafes stay put ๐Ÿ™๏ธ

๐Ÿ˜‚ I mean, what's next? Are they gonna kick out the ice cream van down the street too? ๐Ÿคฃ These landlords are always on about 'raising money' but honestly, it's just an excuse to sell out to big business. Can't they see how their decision is hurting local families and small business owners who actually care about this community? It's like they're trying to strangle the life out of our little corner of London. I'm not buying it when they say 'retain existing staff' - that's just code for 'hire cheaper, more obedient staff'. And let's be real, Daisy Green is just a fancy new name for ' corporation-controlled cafe'. We need to keep supporting these independent cafes and show the city council who's boss! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ‘Š

๐Ÿค• this is just a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. the city corp should've done better research before pushing out these small business owners... and now what? it'll probably be back to square one once the courts sort things out ๐Ÿค‘ also, can we talk about how expensive crowdfunding campaigns get? ยฃ9k from 22k people is still a drop in the bucket for the actual costs of running those cafes ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿค” I'm so glad this reprieve came through for those three lovely cafes in north London! It's crazy to think about how a big corp like the City of London Corp could just try to evict local businesses like that without even thinking about the community impact ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. It's amazing that Patrick and Emma fought back with such determination and even got some top-tier celeb support ๐Ÿ˜Š. Now, let's keep our fingers crossed for a more permanent solution that benefits both the cafes and the community ๐Ÿ‘. And can we talk about how awesome it is to see people coming together through social media & crowdfunding campaigns? It's truly heartwarming to see so many people rallying behind these two talented entrepreneurs ๐Ÿ’•!

So this is exactly what I'm talking about ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ - the government and its agencies just making life harder for small business owners and the local community. I mean, come on, who needs a high-profile actor to back up a campaign when we have real people like Patrick Matthews and Emma Fernandez fighting for their livelihoods? ๐Ÿ™„ The City of London Corporation is basically acting like a corporate entity, prioritizing profits over people. And let's not forget, this whole thing started with a commercial exercise in the retendering process... sounds like a classic case of crony capitalism to me! ๐Ÿ’ธ But you know what the bigger issue here is? It's not just about three cafes; it's about the system that allows these kinds of decisions to be made without any real scrutiny or accountability. We need to be talking about systemic change, folks, not just temporary reprieves ๐Ÿ™

I'm so relieved for Patrick & Emma, they must be super stressed out ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Running a cafe is hard enough without all this drama ๐Ÿคฏ. I think it's great that the community has come together to support them - 22k signatures on a petition? That's amazing! ๐Ÿ’• It shows that Londoners care about their local businesses and don't want to see them go up in smoke. Fingers crossed they can keep fighting for what's right ๐Ÿคž. And I'm glad to hear Daisy Green is trying to do the right thing, too - it's not all bad news, I suppose ๐Ÿ˜Š. This reprieve gives Patrick & Emma some space to breathe and strategize... now let's hope they can come out on top ๐Ÿ’ช!

Wow ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘ this is so interesting... can't believe how much public support these cafe owners have got, like 22k people backing them on a petition! and I feel for them, being evicted would be super stressful for their business ๐Ÿคฏ what's up with the corporation wanting to make money from the cafes instead of serving the community tho? seems shady ๐Ÿ’ธ

OMG u guys!!! ๐Ÿคฏ I cant even believe wut happend w/ those 3 london cafes!!! ๐Ÿต๐Ÿ’ธ so like the corp tried to kick em out cuz they wanted 2 give it 2 this new aussie-inspired chain, daisy green... but those cafe owners fought back & got a stay of execution lol! ๐Ÿ™Œ 22k ppl signed that petition 2 keep them open & they raised over ยฃ9k 2 fund their legal battle... thats so awesome!!! ๐Ÿ˜Š and even actors like benedict cumberbatch & james mcavoy are backing them!!! ๐Ÿ‘ now lets see if they can actually get those cafes saved ๐Ÿคž
