BBC Sports Personality of the Year to be held on 18 December

The BBC has announced that its annual Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place at MediaCityUK in Salford, Manchester, on Thursday, 18 December. The event, which celebrates an incredible 12 months of sporting drama and triumph, will feature a host of top athletes, teams, and coaches competing for seven prestigious awards.

The main prize, BBC Sports Personality of the Year, will once again be decided by public vote on the night of the show, alongside the Team of the Year award. The Team of the Year category is new to this year's ceremony, with a special online voting process in place for fans to have their say before the live event.

Previous winners, including Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson and BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year-winning Wigan, will also be announced during the show.

This year's awards will be presented by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, and Clare Balding from 19:00 GMT on BBC One, the BBC iPlayer, and the BBC Sport website and app. The event promises to deliver an unforgettable night of sports action and drama, celebrating an incredible 12 months of triumph and achievement in the world of sport.

Seven awards will be up for grabs, including the main prize, World Sport Star of the Year, Helen Rollason award, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement award. Audiences can vote online from December, with a live announcement of the shortlists to follow.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, expressed his excitement for this year's event: "This year has once again been packed full of amazing sporting moments and stories. I'm glad it's not me having to pick who to vote for!" The 2025 Sports Personality of the Year show promises to be an unmissable night of sports action and drama, celebrating another brilliant year in the world of sport.

🏆👏 So excited that the Sports Personality of the Year ceremony is coming up! I've been following some amazing athletes this year 🤩 like Hannah Mills who won gold at the Olympics 🌟. It's going to be so cool to see all these talented sports stars come together on one night 🎉. Wow 🤯 BBC should consider going digital only for this event, it would save so much time and money! Also, 7 awards? That's too many, can't they just narrow it down to top 3 like everyone else does? Interesting 😊
 
I mean, isn't it a bit weird that they're introducing a new Team of the Year award? Like, what's next? Are we gonna get a vote for Best Supporting Actor too 🤔? On a more serious note, I'm curious to see how much influence online voting is gonna have on who wins... will it just be a popularity contest or are there some real criteria being taken into account? And also, can't they do this whole thing live instead of waiting until December 18th? It feels like we're already past the point where anyone's gonna make last-minute changes in their year 📆

I don't know, it all feels like some big PR stunt to me 📣. And what's with the "unforgettable night of sports action and drama"? That just sounds like marketing speak to me 😒. Give me some real stats on who's been dominating in their sport or something, and maybe then I'll be interested 📊.

I heard they're gonna make the Team of the Year award super interactive this year 🤔... like, fans can vote online beforehand? That's a big change! I'm curious if it'll be more inclusive or just another way to get people engaged. They've got some solid winners lined up too, including Olympic champ Keely Hodgkinson and Wigan, so that's cool. But what about the other categories?
