BBC Sports Personality of the Year to be held on 18 December

The BBC has announced that its annual Sports Personality of the Year ceremony will take place at MediaCityUK in Salford, Manchester, on Thursday, 18 December. The event, which celebrates an incredible 12 months of sporting drama and triumph, will feature a host of top athletes, teams, and coaches competing for seven prestigious awards.

The main prize, BBC Sports Personality of the Year, will once again be decided by public vote on the night of the show, alongside the Team of the Year award. The Team of the Year category is new to this year's ceremony, with a special online voting process in place for fans to have their say before the live event.

Previous winners, including Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson and BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year-winning Wigan, will also be announced during the show.

This year's awards will be presented by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, and Clare Balding from 19:00 GMT on BBC One, the BBC iPlayer, and the BBC Sport website and app. The event promises to deliver an unforgettable night of sports action and drama, celebrating an incredible 12 months of triumph and achievement in the world of sport.

Seven awards will be up for grabs, including the main prize, World Sport Star of the Year, Helen Rollason award, Young Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, and Lifetime Achievement award. Audiences can vote online from December, with a live announcement of the shortlists to follow.

Alex Kay-Jelski, Director of BBC Sport, expressed his excitement for this year's event: "This year has once again been packed full of amazing sporting moments and stories. I'm glad it's not me having to pick who to vote for!" The 2025 Sports Personality of the Year show promises to be an unmissable night of sports action and drama, celebrating another brilliant year in the world of sport.

🀩 gonna be such a great show this year! love how they're adding a new Team of the Year award, that's so exciting for fans who cheer on their teams all season long πŸ†πŸ‘

omg can't believe its already dec... been hearing so many rumors about keely hodgkinson winning her second bspoty 🀯 like did u guys know wigan won team of the yr last yr? i'm low-key hyped for this yrs ceremony, gonna be epic! πŸŽ‰ has anyone seen the shortlist for the world sport star of the yr award yet? and btw, alex kay-jelski sounds like a comedic genius lol "i'm glad it's not me having to pick who to vote for" tbh can u imagine?! πŸ˜‚

πŸ†πŸ‘ So excited that the Sports Personality of the Year ceremony is coming up! I've been following some amazing athletes this year 🀩 like Hannah Mills who won gold at the Olympics 🌟. It's going to be so cool to see all these talented sports stars come together on one night πŸŽ‰. Can't wait for the live show and voting online - gotta get my vote in for my favorite athlete! πŸ—³οΈ Hope it's a fantastic event with lots of drama and surprises πŸ”₯

omg can u believe its already december?! 🀯 i was thinking about how the athletes must feel right now they've been grinding all year and now its time to shine at the spoy show! πŸ† i hope they do well and get that lifetime achievement award lol imagine being like 40 or somethin and still killin the game tho! πŸ’ͺ anyway gotta give a shoutout to alex kay-jelski bc he's low-key hilarious i love how he dodges voting duties πŸ˜‚

Wow 🀯 BBC should consider going digital only for this event, it would save so much time and money! Also, 7 awards? That's too many, can't they just narrow it down to top 3 like everyone else does? Interesting 😊

I mean, isn't it a bit weird that they're introducing a new Team of the Year award? Like, what's next? Are we gonna get a vote for Best Supporting Actor too πŸ€”? On a more serious note, I'm curious to see how much influence online voting is gonna have on who wins... will it just be a popularity contest or are there some real criteria being taken into account? And also, can't they do this whole thing live instead of waiting until December 18th? It feels like we're already past the point where anyone's gonna make last-minute changes in their year πŸ“†

omg i cant believe its already december lol weve been waiting all year for this event! i love how they introduced team of the year category last year it added a new twist to the whole thing 🀩 plus gabby logan alex scott and clare balding are gonna host this thing and im low-key excited πŸ˜† cant wait to see who wins world sport star of the year and coach of the year πŸ™Œ

Meh, a whole evening about sports? πŸ€” I mean, how exciting can it get, right? Everyone's just gonna stand around waiting for someone to mention a famous athlete's name or something... I don't know, it all feels like some big PR stunt to me πŸ“£. And what's with the "unforgettable night of sports action and drama"? That just sounds like marketing speak to me πŸ˜’. Give me some real stats on who's been dominating in their sport or something, and maybe then I'll be interested πŸ“Š.

omg u guys think its weird that theyre havin a team of the year award now? i mean its cool n all but what about teams that havent won any awards lol like the underdog teams that always give it their all 🀣 anyway cant wait for dec 18th to see who wins which team is gonna be up for that award tho? and btw alex kay-jelski is lowkey hilarious πŸ€ͺ

I heard they're gonna make the Team of the Year award super interactive this year πŸ€”... like, fans can vote online beforehand? That's a big change! I'm curious if it'll be more inclusive or just another way to get people engaged. They've got some solid winners lined up too, including Olympic champ Keely Hodgkinson and Wigan, so that's cool. But what about the other categories? Coach of the Year can be super competitive, and Lifetime Achievement award is all about honoring legends... will it be more than just a few names on a list πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ?
