‘Stealing Isn’t Innovation’: Cyndi Lauper, Questlove & More Artists Sign on to AI Licensing Campaign

Major Music Artists Join Forces to Fight AI-Generated Content Theft. A star-studded lineup of artists, including Cyndi Lauper, Questlove, and Jason Isbell, has signed on to a new campaign aimed at preventing the unauthorized use of copyrighted music to train generative artificial intelligence models.

The "Stealing Isn't Innovation" campaign, led by the Human Artistry Campaign, brings together nearly 800 creators who are protesting the unlicensed use of their work. The coalition, which includes prominent entertainment industry groups like the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA), has long advocated for AI regulation and is critical of companies that train on human-made music without compensating creators.

According to a statement from the Human Artistry Campaign, "Profit-hungry technology companies have copied a massive amount of creative content online without authorization or payment to those who created it." The campaign argues that this practice not only hurts American creators but also undermines original works and makes it difficult for artists to continue producing new music.

In response, the coalition is pushing for AI companies to make licensing deals with creators. This move comes after several major labels and publishers entered into licensing agreements with AI services like Udio and Suno in recent months. These deals have helped resolve some of the claims brought by big-label groups against Suno and Udio in landmark copyright infringement litigation.

However, the fight is far from over. UMG still has active claims against Suno, and Sony has yet to settle with either AI company. The future of AI music training remains uncertain until more settlements are reached or a judge decides whether the principle of "fair use" allows for the conduct of "transformative" training using unlicensed works.

The campaign's efforts have garnered support from prominent actors like Scarlett Johansson and bestselling authors like Jodi Picoult, further highlighting the growing concern about AI-generated content theft.

"You can't control the wind, but you can adjust your sails." 🌬️🎶 I think it's cool that major artists are taking a stand against AI-generated content theft. It's like they're saying "Hey, our work is valuable and deserves to be respected" 🤑 Artists need to protect their intellectual property and be paid for their creations. But at the same time, AI tech companies should also be held accountable for using unlicensed music without permission or compensation 💸 The line needs to be drawn between innovation and exploitation 🚫

I gotta say, I'm all for this "Stealing Isn't Innovation" campaign 🤔... but at the same time, isn't it kinda hypocritical of these artists to be so quick to sue companies that are using their music to train AI models? Like, didn't they used to do the same thing back in the day when they were discovering new sounds and styles? 🎶 And what's with the label groups making deals with AI services now - aren't they just profiting off the very thing they're complaining about? 💸

And another thing, what's fair use gonna get us? Are we just gonna let companies train on all this unlicensed music because it's "transformative" or whatever 🤷‍♂️. I mean, if I wanted to train an AI model with 90s alt-rock tracks, should I have to ask Cyndi Lauper for permission? 😂 It's a bit of a slippery slope, don't you think?

Anyway, it's cool that more creators are speaking out... but can we just take a step back and think about the bigger picture here? 💡 Maybe instead of suing companies, artists should be working together to create new music and models that actually benefit everyone 🎉

man this is crazy... they're not just talking about music anymore, its all about who owns the creativity 🤯. I feel bad for the artists, I mean they're already struggling to make a living from their work and now some tech companies are taking it without paying them? that's just not right.

I'm glad to see so many creators coming together to fight for what's rightfully theirs tho 💪. it's about time we start valuing human artistry over profit 🎨. I wish more people would understand that creating something new is hard work and deserves respect.

anyway, I think this is a good step towards getting some answers... maybe with more deals like the ones with Udio and Suno, things will start to look up for all creators 🤞. but until then, let's keep supporting those who are standing up for their rights 💕.

Ugh I just got the most amazing vintage camera online for super cheap 😅 but now I'm thinking of going to that thrift store in Brooklyn this weekend to find some old record players... do you think they'll have any of those retro cameras there? And on a more serious note, have you guys listened to Jason Isbell's latest album? It's so good 🎶 I mean I love Cyndi Lauper too, but that song "True Colors" always makes me want to sing along at the top of my lungs... and speaking of colors, have you seen those new art exhibits in LA? Apparently they're showcasing some incredible works on display 💡

🤔 The line between progress and exploitation is often blurred, but it's up to us to draw a clear line. We must be mindful of the value we place on human creativity. 💡

I'm totally down with artists standing up for their rights, but I gotta wonder if this is just a PR stunt 🤔. I mean, we all know that some of these big-name acts have been pretty vocal about being "independent" and not wanting to be tied down by traditional labels. So, are they really putting their money where their mouth is? 💸

And what about the fact that some of these companies are already making deals with AI services like Udio and Suno? That's gotta be a good sign, right? 🤞 I just wish we'd see more transparency around how these licensing agreements work and whether they're really helping to protect creators' rights.

Still, I'm all for supporting the artists who are speaking out against this issue. We need more voices like Cyndi Lauper's to make a real difference 💪. And I gotta give props to Jodi Picoult for lending her name to this cause - she's always been a fierce advocate for writers' rights 📚.

I'm kinda worried about this whole thing 🤔... I mean, as an artist myself, it's frustrating to think that my work is just being used to train some fancy AI model without so much as a thank you or a paycheck 💸. But at the same time, I get why they wanna make these deals - it's all about making money and protecting their interests 💼.

But what really gets me is when people talk about "fair use" 🤷‍♀️... like, how can it be fair for some company to just take a ton of copyrighted material without paying anyone? It doesn't seem right to me 😒. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this all plays out 💡...

idk how many times i've seen artists get disrespected for their work... these major music artists are finally standing up for themselves & each other 🤝 it's not just about the money tho, it's about protecting their art from being used without permission or credit. AI is a game changer, but only if we can make sure the creators are compensated for their work 💸 I'm hyped to see more artists join the campaign & I'm rooting for them all the way 🎶

I'm low-key worried about this whole thing 🤔. I mean, can you imagine if someone made a song using my old YouTube clips without asking? 😱 That would be super frustrating and a total bummer for me. But seriously, the music industry has been dealing with these issues for ages, and it's crazy that it's still an issue now. The problem is, if AI companies don't start paying artists or at least getting permission to use our work, they'll just keep churning out copies of everyone else's stuff without adding anything new to the mix 📚💻.

I think it's awesome that these major music artists are standing up for themselves and for their fellow creators. It takes a lot of courage to speak out like that. And I'm glad to see some other industries like publishing getting on board too. But what really concerns me is the fact that we're still figuring this whole AI thing out 🤖💡. Can't we find a way to make it work for everyone? Maybe there's a middle ground where artists get some credit and compensation, but also get to explore new creative avenues? 💫

Ugh I remember when music was actually created by people... not just by algorithms 🤖. This whole AI thing is just a pain in the butt for artists who've spent years crafting their sound. Like what's next? AI-generated movies and books? Can you imagine? It's like the internet is just sucking the soul out of creative work 🙅‍♂️. I mean, these big companies are raking it in from training on human music without even paying the artists... it's just not right 🤑. And don't even get me started on how this whole "transformative" thing is just a fancy way of saying "we can use your work however we want". Give me a break! Can't they just make some decent licensing deals and be done with it? It's like they're trying to erase the human touch from music altogether 😢.

I'm so done with these tech companies just taking our art and using it to train their AI models without even giving us a shout out or a penny 💸🎶. It's not like we're asking for much, just some respect for the creative work that goes into making something new and original in the first place 🤷‍♀️.

I mean, think about it - if someone took your car and used it to train their AI, you'd be pretty upset, right? 🚗😒 But with music, it's like we're invisible. Our work is just a commodity for these companies to use and exploit without any consideration for the people who created it in the first place 💔.

I'm all for innovation, but not at the expense of creators' rights 🤝. It's time for these tech giants to step up and make some changes - start with licensing deals that actually compensate artists and support original work 📈. The future of music and art depends on it 🎵💪

I'm so done with these AI companies just taking people's work without permission 🤯! I mean, if you wanna use someone's song to train your AI model, at least give 'em a shout out and some cash, right? It's like, they're basically profiting off of other people's creativity. And don't even get me started on the whole "fair use" thing - it just sounds like a fancy way of saying "we can do what we want because we say so." The fact is, these artists are still making music and creating content, but they're not getting paid for it. It's like, come on, companies! Get your act together and make some deals with the creators already! 🤑

🤔 I'm all for artists fighting back against their work being used without permission, but I think it's also important to acknowledge that some of this is just a matter of time and tech evolution 🕰️. We can't keep the same music industry business model forever, you know? And let's be real, who hasn't been guilty of "borrowing" ideas from others at some point in their creative journey 💡?

I mean, have we ever thought about how AI-generated content is just a reflection of our own societal issues with ownership and creativity 🤖? Like, if we're paying companies to use our work without permission, aren't we also perpetuating the problem? 🤷‍♀️

But at the same time, I don't want to see creators getting taken advantage of and not getting paid for their work 💸. It's all about finding that balance and making sure everyone benefits from this tech revolution 🌈. Maybe it's time we rethink our entire approach to music licensing and ownership? 🎶

AI-generated music is just another excuse for tech companies to avoid paying artists 🤑🎵. It's not that hard to give creators a nod (pun intended) and compensate them for their work. I mean, if you're going to use someone else's music to train your algorithms, at least make it right 🙏. It's not like artists are just sitting around twiddling their thumbs waiting for the next big thing (although, let's be real, some of us have been doing that for years). The fact that major labels and publishers are finally getting in on the licensing action is a good start, but it's about time someone took responsibility for this mess 🙄.

omg u guys can't even imagine the state of the music industry rn! 😱 these massive tech companies are basically taking every talented artist's work and using it to train their AI models without paying them a dime 🤑 like, come on! shouldn't they just compensate creators for the use of their work? 🤷‍♀️ the fact that some artists have already entered into licensing deals with AI services is a good start but we need more 💪 and this "Stealing Isn't Innovation" campaign is literally everything i'm here for 🎉

I mean can you even imagine if this was the case with movies or literature? Like, think about it, a massive amount of creative work just being used by companies to train their AI models without any regard for the creators' rights? 🤯 It's not like they're just "stealing" but more like they're profiting off someone else's labor without permission. The whole thing is messed up.

And you know who gets hit the hardest in this scenario? Not the tech companies, that's for sure. They get to reap all the benefits while artists and creators are left holding the bag. It's time for some real accountability here. We need to start seeing some real change on the policy side of things.

I'm not saying we should just shut down AI entirely, but we do need some regulations in place that protect creators' rights. It's like, if you're going to use someone else's work to train your AI model, you'd better be willing to pay them a fair wage for it. Anything less is just plain unfair. 🤑

aww man, its so unfair that ppl r getting paid 4 their work & those tech companies are just using it without even askin! 😔 imagine if someone wuz makin movies or paintin art & u just used it without payin them 🤯 thats not cool! i think its awesome that all these talented artists r comin together to stand up 4 themselves & their rights 💪 the more ppl who speak out, the less likely those companies are 2 get away w/ this stuff 🙅‍♂️ hope the campaign works & creators start gettin the recognition they deserve 💕
